the marketing of ontario tur nips and all carlots must come un der government inspection there is a growing trade from the province to the united states mostly from limestone districts that produce a high quality turnip last year this amounted to over 4000 carloads or 2000000 bushels the marketing board became par ticularly interested in the industry as it was felt farmers were getting a low price tor this crop and that something might bo done to secure more satisfactory returns now official grading has been adopted whereby buyers may be assured they are getting a uniformly high quality product several meetings were held by the shippers resulting in a re quest to both the provincial and federal minister of agriculture that as a first step compulsory grading of all turnips be established before supplies leave the shipping point plans for central packing grading washing and branding are being considered and many sections are taking steps to follow the lead of tho blackwater district which has pioneered the way in modern turn ip merchandising the blackwator growers association has increased returns more than 50 por cent for held run turnip as a result of their special pack b after numerous indications that buyers especially tlic36 frni the chain store organizations are becoming dissatisfied with the groat variation in weight of similar products in similar packages tomatoes he continued con stitute an example of this condi tion personally i have examined the contents ot several baskets of tomatoes ostensibly the same weight only to find weight varia tions as great as three and tour pounds in many cases this situation is acting to the disadvantage of producers since naturally buyors are concentrating their attention on the wellfilled baskets leaving tho lighter weight baskets in the hands of tho whole saler as tho growing season ad vances and prices drop returns from theso slow moving packages will decrease tho resultant loss be ing sustained for the most part by the producer so until such cime as regula tions call for specific weights which in my opinion is tho only practical solution to this question producers will protect their own intorests only by sending wellfilled baskets to these distributing points 9 in goneral the counties lying north of a lino drawn from toron to to sarnla bavo from slightly be low to an average crop while the counties south of fulton states that there is every indication of liberal supplies of apples in north america nova scotia promises to have a heavy crop of apples while virginia ontarios principal com petitor in the united kingdom will likely expoxt fair quantities during the coming season even though there is not a heavy crop there in british columbia the crop is stat ed to be about 20 per cent lighter which should help the barrel sit uation considerably in england ihere is a heavy crop of early cooking apples which is bound to affect the price of canadian cook- mr fulton good quality ontar- be wanted and that tills coming season will be a year when quality will count following an inspection tour of ontario he declares that the out look is for a slightly larger crop of apples than last year eastern on tario will be about ten per cent lighter and western ontario approx imately 25 per cent heavier than last year he adds the quality is exceptionally good and so far well- sprayed orchards are clean i have never known more spraying to be done in ontario than this year and there is every indication that the bulk ot the crop will be eligible for certification for tho export market mitchell p heburn
