the factory of the gold fish supply co on saturday morning about 10 oclock the blaze which evidently started from a stove in the shipping room obtained good headway before it was noticed and gave the fire brigade under chief bert tait a hard bmle for two hours or more the boys were successful in confining the flames to the interior of the largo shipping room on the main floor the amount of damage is hard to estimate several hundred dollars will repair the building but a large amount of stock in an adjoining room suffered from water damage and 5000 fish were destroyed not from the water but from smoke and other troubles the fire was first noticed when the flames lapped under the office door where mr homes was work ing and he had to retreat to the street by another entrance the fire brigade made a prompt response and three streams were eventually used to combat the blaze the boys did good work in the terrific smoke and hitler cold weather and because of their efforts the building was saved from being wrecked the company intend to hasten repairs which are delayed a few- days until tho insurance appraisal is made it is believed the damage to building is completely covered also the stock but not the gold fish dependents demanded service imurphies was murphies for a short time at least right at the out set of the whitchurch council meet ing in vandorf hall last saturday so that he would not soil big good clothes it is said a prompt refusal was made to this request words follow ed and the farmer drove off taking the two bags of spuds with him accordingly tlie gent who was so particular about having the full handout carried right in over his doorstep was advised to present himself at tlie council meeting and show causo why- he should not gi hungry on the theory that a womans tongue will revolve three to one over a mans the individual from the lake brought along his better half nor did she fail her hunibly and when the signal was given by reeve kidd the woman let drawing it to town tho principal of our continua tion school approves tho system of pupils passing their entrance exam ination to high school on the term work and so informed the school board at their regular meeting held on friday mr watson pointed out that pupils from such small schools as altona were getting their en trance to high school under this plan and he found them capable many other rural places had adopt ed the plan and 90 per cent of tho larger schools there is a saving to the parents who will not be requir ed to advance 1 per pupil as they now do to cover examination costs the question was thoroughly de bated by members of the board all of whom thought tlie new system sliquld como into effect locally accordingly ambrose stover intro duced a resolution placing the board on record as approving the plan and calling on the inspector to institute the necessary procedure to bring the arrangement into force the won derfully successful record of our public school principal mr cedric watson in passing pupils through the entrance was viewed as a rea son for introducing the term exams setting a new rato of pay for supply teacher when one is required in the public school provoked some discussion in previous years 500 per day was allowed but in lino with reductions an effort was made to lower this amount dr freel suggested 300 per day and perhaps more if teacher were hired for a month the chairman ed baker thought 4 would be all right trustee j w momullen said there would be no harm to do with out a supply teacher at all where the regular teacher was absent for only a few days dr ball though tho matter should be left over until the supply teachers engaged iu january could be consulted thus the matter stands dr freel reported that he had gone earefully into school expendi tures for last year and although a few hundred dollars more had been spent than was collected in grants and taxes he found no fault attach ed to any one there appeared to be no unnecessary expenditures he pointed out that while the local tax payers contribute only 2g0 in direct village tax for maintenance of con tinuation school they also contri bute seven times this amount in the village levy for school debentures the latter item should not be lost sight of in figureing school costs all members of the board were present excepting trustee e lloyd being e w baker j w
