horsestealing case here last week in less than a day and a half after john anderson nobla lgyearold lad sneaked jim meltons driver from its stall on the 8th concession of pickering selling it in millikens he was tried in pickering village sentenced and started on a treemonths term in whitby jail with a year indeter minate to face all in this short spaco of time jim ylton is employed in stouff ville by drs freel but lives on the sth concession of pickering 5 miles distant friday morning on going out to feed his horse he discover ed the animal gone unable to get in touch with- the constable at clare- mont he appealed to the local cop alt pugh who hastily got on the job tracks clearly indicated the animal had been led from tho stable and somehow young ander son was suspected he was more or less familiar with the melton place because his stepfather noble and his mother made their home here last summer the parents it will be recalled created some sen sation when they set out on foot for montreal in the early part of november the son john had found temporary employment with percy brown just north of stouffville and although his time was up mr brown was good enough to allow the boy to make his home there while locating another place con stable pugh lost no time in going to the brown home where he learned that young noble hadrnot been home over thursday night and had not returned up to this time which was then 9 oclock friday morning he was not expect ed home that night however as he had said he was going to toronto in company with other young men from altona to deliver six horses a the glue factory for his services he was to earn 200 the constable made for toronto on learning of this but at the glue factory only two animals had arrived over night neither of them answering the des cription of the stolen melton steed the cop learned from a truck driver that young anderson had stood outside the store at millikens early that morning hence the chase led back into scarboro the sought- for animal was found stabled on the premises of a man named arthur wood who only a few- hours before bought the driver from anderson for 3 this netted the young horse thief only 250 as he had to shell out 5 0 cents commission to one chris lamorux who brought buyer and seller together chris told the police that anderson appealed to him early friday morn ing to buy his horse he was on the way to toronto he said but lather than finish the trip with his tired steed he would accept less than glue factory price anderson was later taken into custody at mr browns when ho first denied all knowledge of mel tons horse later he admitted his guilt before magistrate clark in pickering village on saturday morning he received his sentence the animal is described as being much too valuable to be consigned to the k p s strings etc hence tho owner while temporarily playing into ill luck was fortunate in getting the horse back had tho animal reached the factory it would have been too late to recover it on saturday afternoon dec i 21th at 330 oclock suitable prizes will be given open to boys and x i girls 15 years and under from any 1 part of the world course of race from the sent being ed baker chairman j w mcmullen ambrose stover and dr h freel the continuation school inspect or having only been in town very recently his report was not avail able for this meeting but the re port of inspector wilkinson for the public school was a glowing tri bute to the efficiency of the staff and condition of the school and general equipment the report of principal hugh watson showed 102 of an enrol ment in the continuation school the largest on record in the public school principal cedric watson re ported an enrolment of 163 with an average attendance of 149 tho board voiced strong criti- reported repairs were necessary cism about an account from empire brass co for supplies for repairs to the boiler recently mr r o ward inspected the boiler connect ed with tho heating system and re ported it defective the inspector immediate repairs were necessary otherwise he would not accept the responsibility if anything happened by way of an explosion the repairs were rushed without the knowledge of the full board but on the con cent of the property committee trustees mcmullen and stover said they had no idea about the cost giving their consent because it- was urgent work tho account about 50 was laid on the table while this was the farewell meet ing of the year no notlco was taken of tho fact by way of valedictory addressos accounts ordered paid brathwaito supplies 23 at the international live stock show held at the union stock yards chicago recently c j brodies southdowns won 3rd prize in carlot or native lambs 3rd prize in john clay and packers special and 4th in dressed carcass the lambs exhibited were sold by auc tion following the show at 16 a cents per pound outselling the 2nd prize carlot by 5 cents per pound the 56 lambs marketted in chicago by mr brodie netted back slightly over 16 each the trip from the royal winter fair in toronto to chicago was more exciting than usual this year says mr brodie when entering the united states at port huron on november 23rd officials held the men of the canadian live stock train in the immigration office for over seven hours on returning to tho stock cars the canadians found their trunk locks had been destroy ed bags of feed burst crates of feed damaged and the contents of trunks strewn about the cars a sum of money had been stolen a practically new overcoat had been removed from a box in a trunk and thrown under the feet of cattle completely ruined customs men had been at work loss and damage were reported to the icustoms office and all tho night duty men were recalled to headquarters from their homes in the presence of the chief of police the customs department made a thorough investigation to find who was responsible for the damage it was someones duty to search the carloads of sheep but none would edmit having done so finally the train proceeded washington and ottawa officials were duly notified and when the return train from chicago drew into port huron on december 4th washington officials were on hand to conduct a grilling inquiry into the whole matter n l lesueur k c of sarnia was pre sent in the interests of the canadians mr brodie says the canadian exhibitors have always found customs and immigration officials at port huron very courteous apparently reports had reached washington that liquor usually was taken over by a few on this train and special men sent from detroit had made a rigorous checkup fol lowing the customary search by regular officials a sarnia reporter terms the detroit gang a wrecking squad of customs men but in spiter of their destructive search no spoils were captured no restitution has been made by washington as yet for the loss and damage suffered at tho hands of the special us customs officials concluded mr brodie thursday dec 15th is the final and statutory meeting day for all municipal councils in towns vill ages and townships so far as the markham whit church and stouffville bodies are concerned they will meet in the afternoon with whitchurch possibly getting started at 10 oclock stouffville council which usually gathers in the evening decided at their last meeting to assemble earlier in the day church hill farm vandals damage cashel school furnishings tho caretaker of the school at ss no 13 maikhara cashel was astounded ontuesdrfy morning when on opening the softool he discovered the place in l perfect bedlem of con fusion booksxvere thrown in every corner tornyfiind mutilated while even the cutuuns and window blinds were wantonly torn from their hang ings and thrown upon the floor it was all the work of some vandals who made their entry by breaking through one of the school windows the culprits had evidently spent the night in the building where it was warm and sheltered from the cold night investigation further shbwefi that the vandals had evidently travelled in a stolen car which was left stran ded at archie flemings gate with a flat tire the same evening a car was stolen from perkins hardware in unionville and it is believed the thieves were those who operated at cashel the school at cashel is in excel lent condition with good furnish ings and the teacher is miss grace niceley of ringwood constable walker was on the job early in an effort to trace down the guilty ones on a recent afternoon a party of four men presumably on a hunt- lug expenditiou killed and made off with six extra choice turkeys on the farm ot geer at church hill north of stouffville at the same time the culprits molested the beo colonies belonging to jesse byer of mark ham at church hill and destroyed two colonies of bees mr byer is out to make an example of the offenders should they be traced down during the afternoon a strange car was seen to pull oft tho road just south of wm beachs place beach is a township constable and three of the four occupants had guns it was surmised by mr beach who saw them that they were going into the woods and fields for a hunt hence he failed to investigate or get their license number chas degeer was ploughing in a field nearby and ho was not dis turbed either by the presence of tho strangers however when he was enroute from the field for the supper hour he discovered six of his best turkeys missing and evidenced that they had been bled and killed nearby by the feathers and blood about as the poor sports had eaten lunch where the car was parked the remains were thrown about canned goods indicated their pur chases had been from a certain chain store in toronto not repre sented in this district because of this it is figured the offenders were toronto lads christian chukches at stouffviiiljs and churcn httdtj rev chester o sommcr minister sunday dec istu stouffvillo 1000 am sunday school 1100 am worship preaching 700 pm
