NOVEMBER 2003 Unsuccessful attempts to clear land in Uxbridge Township led him to petition the Province of Upper Canada for the lease of a lot on the comer of A ship's carpenter with the navy during the Napoleonic wars, Jonathan Petch decided that emigrating to Canada would provide the best future for his family. Experiences living and working remotely in Uxbridge had taught him the value of neighbours. The property was what was known as a Clergy Reserve lot, and his rent money was put towards education in Upper Canada. In l840 he was finally able to purchase the land Sideroad adjacent to the property of lames Hacking. Undoubtedly warmer than a barn. the building was nonetheless still cold and draughty, and by l88i members of the community decided that a new brick church was needed. Together providing the necessary materials. land and labour that he had called home for over 20 years. In those eariy years the Petch barn served as a place of worship until a log church named Petch's Chapel was erected in the l8405.
