Friends were made and one in particular, Dale Smillie, introduced her to Stouffville resident Darlene Brown, who is a member of an all- women's riding club named the Motor Maids. the oldest women's motorcycling club in North America. Founded in I938, with chapters worldwide, the 600- Years passed and Lynn never lost the urge to ride and so. in her mid-405, she decided to take the plunge and take a course on motorcycle riding. Passing the test and buying herself a 'bike that first season. she has never looked back, as her love of the freedom and independence of riding continues to grow. ' One country dWeller who loves the great outdoors and is. waiting impatiently for spring to arrive is Lynn Cox of Ballantrae. In her teenage days, Lynn wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. but was forbidden to do so by her parents, and that ended that, for the time being at least. Hang on for a few more, weeks until March 20. when we celebrate the ï¬rst day of spring and the end of a long. cold winter. A sure-fire way to cure cabin fever is to think about your favourite spring and summer activity. while simultaneously counting the days until the snow melts and plants pop through the earth. Hats off to you. ladies, especially Welland's Audrey Alexandre. who not only brought the Motor Maids to Canada in I955, but also iust celebrated ‘50 years of motorcycle riding. The club's annual convention. to be held this summer in Chico, California. is over 2,800 miles of njing away. A dozen or so local la'dies, Lynn includ- ed, will head out for California from home, hoping to arrive at their destination three to four days later. Other riders will take the slow route and‘make it a month-long sightseeing tourist trip. enjoying the camaraderie of fellow riders along the way. Now. Lynn has not only mastered the motorcycle, but has just been appointed the eastern Canada dis- trict director of the Motor Maids. Up to the chal- Ienge, Lynn is ï¬ghting cabin fever by'looking forward to a great season of riding the back roads near and far. ' This group of ladies takes to the roads from spring through fall. dressed in their uniform of white shoes, grey pants with a blue shirt and white tie. with matching gloves. En masse they are a sight to behold, a proud and interesting group of women from all walks of life. ‘ strong international group has members ranging in age from their 205 to their late 705.
