The Doors Open Whitchurch- Stouffville Committee Erected in 1829 by Casper Sherk, one of the township‘s many German settlers, Bruce's Mill was originally known as the North Markham Mill. Mr. Sherk also built the original dam in 1827 and a sawmill in I828, and his flour mill was taken over by the Bruce brothers, William and Robert, in late 1842 and renamed Carrick Mills after their homeland of Scotland. Though neither of the brothers had any experience in mill operations. their grandfather in Scotland had been a miller and many of their neighbours helped them learn the intricacies of milling. In fact. the brothers proved to be astute businessmen and the Bruce family prospered. In one instance, Robert Bruce studied German to better communicate with the many German-speaking customers who worked and lived in the area. Bruce’s Mill one of the last working mills in Ontario By 1858 the original mill was replaced by the present building, with timber from the old structure used in the construction of the storehouse on the north side. Throughout much of the mill's history power was provided inexpensively and efï¬ciently by using a flume fed from the dam.
