Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, December 15, 2016 | 14 COLUMN Jack and Sadie Greenshields celebrate 70 years of marriage Edward Island. After completing elementary school, she obtained a position with Toronto's Dunlop Tire and Rubber Co. Following marriage, she and Jack left on a short honeymoon to Ajax, travelling in a 1938 GMC panel truck. They later took up residence in an apartment on Muriel Avenue in the Pape and Danforth district. Nine years later, Jack purchased a $500 building lot in Thornhill and, with the help of a partner, built a house and opened a business. For a hobby, the two enjoyed competing in races at Pinecrest where their speedy Ford could outrace most in its class. In 1960, Jack and Sadie acquired a 10-acre property in Altona. The site was later purchased by Revenue Properties on expectations of establishing a 'city'. This project never material- "Togetherness" is a single word that speaks volumes for Stouffville's Jack and Sadie Greenshields. Their bonding, sealed by marriage Nov. 14, 1946, has spanned a remarkable 70 years. With no signs of waning. Jack is 88. Sadie is 90. Born in Toronto, the son of John and Barbara Greenshields, Jack was still young when, in 1939, his father enlisted as an engineer in a branch of the Canadian army and was posted overseas. He died a week before returning home. Jack was only 11 at the time. This tragedy left Jack no choice, but to leave school and begin work at a Toronto shipyard. He also joined the Canadian army reserve. His brother Andrew currently resides in Toronto and sister Nellie lives in Thornhill. Sadie (Ward) is a native of Charlottetown, Prince JIM THOMAS Roaming Around ized. They've since resided in Stouffville, the past 3 ½ years at Parkview Suites. A quality welder, Jack spent 10 years with Frigidaire, first at a plant in Leaside and later, Scarborough. Instrumental music has long been a tradition in the Greenshields family. Jack's father played the coronet in a Salvation Army band while his son has been prominent on the trombone. For more than 33 years Jack was a member of the People's Church orchestra, Willowdale and later the Newmarket Citizens Band. He also played the tuba in the Markham Concert Band. He credits Stouffville's David Howard with assisting him in mastering the trombone. Jack and Sadie currently attend Northridge Community Church in Newmarket. Mission work has long been important to both. For 12 years Jack served on the staff of Stouffville's Christian Blind Mission and twice travelled to Africa because of this appeal. Together, they've enjoyed many memorable trips including Prince Edward Island; British Columbia and California. They're the proud parents of two sons, Jim in Los Angeles and Barry at Innisfil. They have five grandchildren. Jack and Sadie can be found most mornings at Stouffville's McDonald's and afternoons at Tim Hortons where they share congenial conversations with friends. However, on the occasion of their anniversary, the McDonald's friendship circle took the milestone a step further. Jack and Sadie were treated to a surprise get-together at Stouffville's Swiss Chalet where Yvette Lye, on behalf of the mayor and council, presented the revered couple with a framed congratulatory plaque which now holds a prominent place in their Parkview home. When asked the secret of their long and devoted union, Sadie responded: "Whenever differences occurred, one of us would walk away, just like our cat always did when I tried to sing." Good Neighbour Pam Congratulations to Stouffville's Pamela Lewis, a recent recipient of York Region's Good Neighbour Award. A beautifully engraved plate now holds a prominent place in her Elm Gardens' apartment. She'll further be honoured by town mayor Justin Altmann and members of council when she attends an afternoon meeting Dec. 20. Pam, 66, has been a resident at Elm Gardens for the past 20 years. An accompanying acknowledgment reads: "Pam is consistently kind. She's very helpful, continually putting herself out for people. She's never seen in a bad mood and whenever something goes wrong at the apartment, she's the one tenants call". Pam's response: It's the only way I know how to live."
