Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | 10 COMMUNITY Joanne George and Smiley honoured in photo exhibit Ali Raza aliraza@yrmg.com Photographer Karen Merk says York Region is full of inspirational people. That's why she's organized her touring exhibit "Portraits of Giving" where she recognizes 11 residents and shares their stories. The exhibit began April 13 in Newmarket with an opening reception. Now, after touring all major municipalities in York Region, its last stop is Stouffville. Stouffville's inspirational honouree to be featured is Joanne George and her blind therapy dog Smiley. "I've seen Joanne and Smiley in action and how they touch people's lives," Merk said. "They help seniors, they help children; they're doing wonderful things for the community." The Stouffville exhibit will be displayed at the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertainment (19 on the Park) from Nov. 1 to 21. A special reception will be held Nov. 8 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and will feature Mayor Justin Altmann among other partners and sponsors to recognize the pair. The exhibit will feature all 11 honourees with their portraits and stories. Merk started her exhibit seven years ago, travelling to Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Markham. King and Stouffville were added this year to the tour. She says she's inspired by the people she meets. "When I was doing events photography I kept meeting all these amazing people in the community behind the scenes," Merk said. "I wanted to find a way to shine a spotlight and to amplify them by sharing their stories and portraits." While the Stouffville exhibit is free, April's opening reception in Newmarket was $30 per ticket. Proceeds of that event went to supporting Mackenzie Health, Southlake Regional Health Centre and Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Joanne George and Smiley are among featured residents of York Region being honoured in Karen Merk's touring exhibit "Portraits of Giving."
