WHAT'S ON 11 | Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, October 6, 2016 OktoberFair combines Oktoberfest with Ballantrae Fall Fair Ali Raza aliraza@yrmg.com Get your beer steins ready, Stouffville. The town is celebrating the season by combining two fall events into one mega event, OktoberFair. The Ballantrae Fall Fair and Oktoberfest combine to bring residents a mix of celebrations that features an expanded fall fair and a German-themed but Stouffville-style Oktoberfest. Set for Saturday, Oct. 15 at Memorial Park from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., the event features games, a marketplace, food, breweries, a baking contest, a live band, a pie-eating contest, dance performances, audience participation challenges and more. "The Ballantrae Fall Fair was growing so we wanted to bring it down to Memorial Park," said town events coordinator Julia Jackson. "Moving it to the park, we can have bigger things like a Ferris wheel, midway games, a band and sound system, etc. It was about trying to expand the event." The expanded event will feature a dance performance by the Stouffville Academy of Music and Dance for the opening ceremony scheduled for noon. In tradition with Oktoberfest, Falcon Brewing Company, Brickworks Ciderhouse and Mill Street Brewery will serve specialty beers celebrating the season. Other Oktoberfest events include the Stein race, a partner-carrying contest, a Stein-holding contest and a bratwurst eating contest. Toronto-based band the Happy Wanderers will perform throughout the day after the opening ceremony. It's not just bratwurst on the menu; food vendors from Stouffville and beyond will serve their own offerings in addition to German-style offerings, such as schnitzel on a bun and various pork dishes. Local vendors include Earl of Whitchurch, Annina's Bakeshop and more. Since it's the first time OktoberFair has been held as a joint event, the town expects "a couple thousand" residents to attend, Jackson says. "It's really a family event," she said. "There's lots to do for the whole family and there's a lot of competitions people can get involved in." Oktoberfest is the world's largest beer festival held in Munich, Germany. Held annually since 1810, the festival has expanded into events across North America and Europe.
