70 teams here for girls' tourney Hockey teams from across Southern Ontario and one from Buffalo, N.Y. will converge on Markham and Stouffville when the sixth annual Markham Stouffville Starsfest Girls Hockey Tournament takes place this weekend. A total of 70 teams are scheduled to take to the ice for three-day competition which commences Friday and concludes Sunday. Participating teams will be competing in six age group divisions including: Novice A, B and C; Atom, Peewee and Midget C, B BB, A and AA; Intermediate A and Senior A and BB. Seven playing facilities will be utilized for the event including the Stouffville Arena, Stouffville Clippers Sports Complex, Angus Glen Community Centre, Crosby Memorial Arena, Milliken Arena, Markham Centennial, Mount Joy and Markham Village. In round-robin play, Stouffville battled Whitby to a 2-2 tie and followed that with a 5-4 win over Peterborough and 4-4 tie versus Ajax. Advancing to the semifinals, the Clippers were buoyed by a solid effort from goalie Juan Rivera to blank Peterborough 3-0. Facing Whitby in the final and with both clubs battling to a 3-3 tie through regulation time, each club scored once during the initial three-player shootout including one from Stouffville's Andrew Levesque. With Rivera stopping the next seven Whitby shots, the Clippers won the title on a goal from Jacob Turney. Coached by Corrado Messina, Craig Macinnis, Pete Hary and Mark Turney, other team players contributing to the Clippers' win included: Jack Valleau, Franco Minaudo, Liam MacInnis, Ryan Cusack, Robert Hume, Michael Hary, Tim Arnold, Jordan Lewis, Liam Clements, Sam Roy, Nathan Tratnick, Michael Messina, Mark Assal and Sam Luff. A member of the Markham Mariners AAA peewee team this past season, Xenophontos toiled as a pitcher and third baseman. Attending the recent all-star team tryouts, which were also held in Newmarket and conducted over a few days, Xenophontos was among a number of rep players hailing from York Region and Simcoe that were in attendance.
