Main St. post office `not closing' Stouffville's Canada Post office will remain open. Concern arose of the post office's closure when a letter circulating around town urged residents to lobby Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott to prevent the Main Street office from shutting down. The letter, on Canadian Union of Postal Workers letterhead, included alleged demands of the corporation including the ability to close the Canada Post office on Main Street. The office is currently protected by a moratorium. A spokesperson for Philpott denied the claim to the Sun-Tribune Tuesday and said the post office was not closing. "There are currently no plans to close the Stouffville Post Office," Canada Post spokesperson Phil Legault said in an email Wednesday. "In fact, this month we did renovations to the post office that improved the retail and mailboxes area for our customers." CUPW didn't return calls from The SunTribune. Canada Post and the union reached a new deal Tuesday, averting job action. Canada Post recently adjusted postal codes and addresses in WhitchurchStouffville, with a plan to phase out rural routes and postal codes not starting with "L4A" and unify the mailing address for the entire municipality as "WhitchurchStouffville."
