LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Many really do want Elm Road sidewalks Re: Who really wants Elm Road sidewalks?, letter to the editor by Carole Croteau, Aug. 4. Despite Carole Croteau's claims, we, as residents of Elm Road, are neither "angry" nor "dismayed" at the town or the revitalization of Elm, including the addition of a much needed sidewalk. Elm was a quiet, dead-end, community street on our arrival in 1973. Today, Elm has constant traffic that passes by two elementary schools and Rupert Park. Children and parents will be walking to and from the two schools and the park when most of the people, presently living on the street, will be long gone. However, the re-vamped street with its proposed sidewalk will still be needed and be well used. This sidewalk will not only service residents of Elm, but residents on nearby streets. They, too, have a stake in ensuring pedestrians in the community have the protection afforded by a sidewalk, especially when it is their children walking to/from school or the park. We have been aware of the plans for Elm's rehabilitation for more than five years and have been asking our councillor and town staff when Elm would be done. We expected Elm would be done first, but that didn't happen. Rupert, West Lawn, Glad Park and the south part of Fairview were all done over the past couple of years. In each case, a sidewalk was installed. In the case of Rupert and Elm, the chosen location is the side where the least number of residents are affected, where the sidewalk would border Rupert Park and, in the case of Elm, the side without fire hydrants and water services, street lights and their electrical lines. The sidewalk will be built on the town's portion of each property and will include the 1.5-metre boulevard where the winter snow will end up when that side of the street is plowed (and not on the sidewalk if the sidewalk is placed next to the curb). We are finding it difficult to understand why some residents are complaining that they did not know this project was coming to Elm and what it would entail. Where the sidewalk would go has been a topic of conversation with our neighbours for a couple of years now. Speaking for us only, (but I suspect other residents of Elm and the surrounding community), we are very pleased that this project is underway and we look forward to the gains that we will have as a result. SALMON Last week we did an East Coast ad. It was especially neat for me as I lived there for a number of years... and it was all fun! This week we're going to the West Coast. I have had the good fortune to travel extensively and my first trip to the West Coast was when I thumbed my way out at 16, and that was an education in itself! To this day, I remember the friendliness of the Prairie folk, the expanse of sky, the monstrous and beautiful mountains, and that endless ocean! I have been back many times, whether for golf or just food and adventure, and we'll share some of that food experience this week. Enjoy the trip! WEST COAST STORY GRAPES MANGOES SUGARCRUNCH Evan found these AMAZING green grapes at the market this week and we couldn't help but feature them. SOME PLEASE Terry and Linda Epp Stouffville Wedding brought `much-needed' joy to town We had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Mayor Altmann. The weather was spectacular and the abundance of people in attendance was truly a testament to the mayor's popularity and love for the town. The mood was a mix of extreme happiness and extreme sadness. On the most memorable day of his life, the mayor was dealing with the most sadness a child could think in their life, the passing of his mother. But through it all, his family and friends made the day one of great joy and love. Both Mayor Altmann and his beautiful bride, Jenny, expressed their love for each other and their family during the ceremony. I am sure that there were a few tears in the crowd as they spoke their words to each other making a commitment to last a lifetime. Thank you, Mayor Altmann and now Mrs. Altmann for including all in your celebration. This event has brought to the town a feeling of inclusiveness, joy and happiness that seems to be much needed these days. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Wishing you all the best. These are Keitt variety mangoes from South Florida. When we do our ads, the managers of the different departments in our store submit their items, usually based on the ideas that we discuss in our weekly meetings. I usually expand on what I am given, and explain the ingredients and process, but this week I'm going to use Andrea's actual submission, because it is full of that enthusiasm that brightens my day and most likely yours. So I quote......... 1) Nanaimo Bars in foil pans Reg. $10.99/pan - crust is made with graham crumbs, coconut, pecans and cocoa - topped with sweet layer of custard butter icing - glazed with a layer of melted chocolate 2) Cranberry Praline Crème Brûlée Reg. $4.50 - we start with our cranberry brûlée, which has white chocolate, orange zest and a swirl of our famous brandied cranberry sauce - the twist! After we torch the sugared top we sprinkle it with hazelnut praline crunch 3) Maple Walnut Upside Down Cake Reg. $15.95 Our wonderful baker Andrea sent me this email regarding the ad: Evan, I chose to try this because as I was researching West Coast foods and new recipes.... I discovered that maple syrup production and walnut trees are more prevalent in Western Canada than I knew!! Please write something smart and witty and enticing about this cake like how the crumb has a very soft and fine texture and is moist and fluffy...etc - the topping is made with maple syrup, maple sugar and butter and boiled to a thick caramel sauce - poured into the pan and topped with toasted walnuts - the cake batter is then placed carefully on top of the walnuts so as not to displace them too much - after the cake is baked, it is flipped upside down and glazed with apricot glaze 4) Opera Cake Reg. Sm $15.95 Lg $25.95 Another quote from Andrea: Evan, I chose this while researching menus of top restaurants and bakeries (as you suggested) on the West Coast and many of them offered some version of an Opera Cake. Opera Cake is traditionally made with almond sponge cake and served in rectangular slices.. but this is our Village Grocer version). - 4 layers of vanilla sponge cake, soaked in coffee syrup - every layer has both ganache and coffee buttercream in between - finished with chocolate glaze and toasted sliced almonds - best served at room temperature - 6" or 8" round cakes All these items will be OFF featured this week at Enjoy your dessert!
