Police responded to a call at approximately 4:40 a.m on Friday at Stouffville Variety at Main Street and Tenth Line. On arrival, officers saw a single front door that was smashed. Some items, including a cash box, were stolen from inside the store. Police are looking for "two male parties" and have no further description, said Sgt. Kelly Bachoo. Strawberry Festival vandals frustrate park neighbour The Strawberry Festival brought the town together and hosted thousands of guests, but one resident says it also brought increased vandalism. Peter Mitchell woke up the morning of Sunday, July 3, to find a town pylon placed on his wife's new car, an egg thrown into his living room through an open window and another pylon on top of a neighbour's car. The pylons left scratches on the cars. "A York Regional Police officer told my wife they'd been overrun with vandalism calls this weekend from Stouffville," Mitchell said. "We filed a report, but they never bothered responding." Mitchell's Booth Drive home is near Stouffville Memorial Park where most festival events took place. "We got a change in the people who run the Strawberry Festival," he said. "It seems to me these people need to make a plea next year to council or the police to say there should be highly-increased police patrol in these neighbourhoods at the time the festival is ending." Mitchell has been a Stouffville resident for 40 years. He's seen the festival from its beginnings and says "it's definitely getting worse in terms of rowdiness and vandalism". Town employees removed the pylons the same morning. "It's unfortunate when vandalism happens in our community before, during or after The Strawberry Festival," said festival co-chair Nancy Matheson."Festival security is to deal with incidents that arise during the day and evening, and protects festival grounds overnight. Our paid security does not patrol residential areas. As at any other time of the year, any vandalism to property should be reported to the police."
