Whitchurch-Stouffville town council approved a set of traffic signal installations last week. The new traffic signals are part of a 10-year capital works program that will install lights in locations in Stouffville between 2016 and 2022. A signalized pedestrian crossing on Main Street near the downtown train station is also being considered as part of the street's revitalization. The first intersection slated for installation will be Hoover Park Drive and Sandiford Drive, which currently utilizes all-way stop signs. The estimated cost is $230,000, funded through development charges. But Heritage Advisory Committee member Fred Robbins sees it as an "extra cost" and expressed concerns of increased traffic and speed on the stretch of road that sits adjacent to Oscar Peterson Public School. "We want traffic to move, but we also want to save money for the town," he said at a council meeting. Robbins added that traffic flow should be diverted to Main Street to benefit local businesses. Future traffic signal installations will occur at Tenth Line and Forsyth Farm Drive in 2020, Hoover Park Drive and Mostar Street in 2021 and Hwy. 48 and Bethesda Road in 2022. Whitchurch-Stouffville council approved a new telecommunication tower protocol to align with Industry Canada's new standards at a council meeting last week. Industry Canada's revised guidelines were released in 2014 and the new protocol replaces the town's old policy from April 15, 2008. Notably, staff recommended the town continue to notify residents living within 120 metres of a proposed tower in an urban setting and 500 metres in the rural area. Bring your family and friends `The perception here is they (come into town at night, sneak around, put them (cell towers) up and leave.' Given the recent uproar by residents near a cell tower cell tower proposed for 5295 Durham Road 30 -- which sits just outside of town borders in Pickering -- area councillor Rob Hargrave suggested having "total openness" in communication. "The perception here is they (come into town at night, sneak around, put them (cell towers) up and leave," he said. "In this particular case, Pickering went along with their approval process and never told Stouffville," Hargrave said. The councillor suggested having seminars with the public to talk about the impact of cell towers to assess any health risks. Don't miss out on this important information! RSVP TODAY!
