Shadowpath Theatre Productions presents Readings in Wineries on April 17 where the audience can also be the main cast of a play. If you're a little nervous to act, sample some liquid courage with some of Stouffville's own wines. "I cast the main roles with professional actors," said organizer and Shadowpath artistic director Alex Karolyi. "The other roles are supporting or cameo roles and I hand them out to anyone who feels brave enough -- or intoxicated enough." The one-act comedy play written by Karolyi has around 15 roles, giving the audience plenty of room to choose from to demonstrate their long-hidden acting skills. Still untitled, the play's synopsis is about a group therapy session at the fictional Willow Springs Centre for Success. Stouffville spoken word artist Sterling Dillinger will host the event, reciting his own poetry between performances. Readings in Wineries first began in March 2013 and is now in its seventh production since, almost all of which have been in Stouffville. "Stouffville's just such an awesome place," Karolyi said. "It's got a great winery and great people, so we keep going back." With its unique approach to theatre, Shadowpath hopes to "break boundaries between the audience and the actors," Karolyi explains. The readings were inspired by a similar project Plays in Cafes that first started in 2006. "This is the sophisticated sister," Karolyi said. "Instead of coffee, it's wine, and instead of a few actors, it's a larger cast." Audience members can choose to play a role upon the purchase of a ticket. There are a handful of roles remaining. Karolyi says past events have been great opportunities to socialize and network. The play starts with an introduction, with a participant reading the synopsis of the play, but Karolyi stresses it's not anything formal. "It's just a fun way to connect with the audience and celebrate the local winery," she said. Willow Springs Winery is at 5572 Bethesda Rd.
