22 Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, August 20, 2015 | 19-0 Sharks win provincial title BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA Dan West enters Lindsay hall of fame Former Stouffville Spirit head coach Dan West is one of three individuals along with one team that will be inducted into the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame. West was named head coach of the Spirit during the summer of 2005 and directed them to the Ontario Junior Hockey League championship final that season before losing to the St. Michael's Buzzers. Relieved of his duties with the Spirit after the 2006-07 season, the Oakwood native became head coach of the now defunct Bowmanville Eagles for the start of the 2007-08 season and eventually became head coach of the Lindsay Muskies in 2013. He also coached the Jr. A North Bay Trappers and Jr. C Uxbridge Bruins. Still coaching the Muskies, West also holds the titles of the club's general manager and director of operations. West played in the Ontario Hockey League, Western Canada Hockey League and Jr. A in Summerside, PEI, where he helped his team to a national championship. West and the other inductees will be honoured at the Lindsay Armoury Oct. 25. Mhayakawa@yrmg.com In describing their 2015 softball season, the Stouffville Sharks peewee select boys can boast by saying it was perfect. Putting their 15-0 won-loss record on the line at the provincial championships in Unionville Saturday, the Sharks ran the table that was capped off with an 11-1 win over Springbrook in the final. After a scoreless first inning, the Sharks went on the attack when Evan Farrell belted a home run to lead off the second inning. Not to be outdone, Braden Smith then belted the longest ball of the day for a round tripper to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead. Jack Smalley kept the offence going with a timely double that drove in two more runs. With Smalley and Mathew Offen scoring, the Sharks jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead. Strong pitching and defence enabled the Sharks to close things out, with Nicolas Brandon throwing out the first two batters in the third inning and Scott Hoover making a critical catch on a long fly ball to left field in the fifth. After Springbrook broke up the shutout in the fourth inning with their lone run of the game, the Sharks continued their onslaught and at the end of six innings, the game was over and Sharks captured the provincial crown. Sharks' head coach Steve Hopkins, along with assistants Mike Clements, Mike Farrell and Tom Brandon, were not surprised by the club's performance. "They supported each other and were willing to do whatever it took to make the team successful," Hopkins said. "It has been a real pleasure working with them. We hope they realize how special a provincial championship and 19-0 season is." To reach the final, the Sharks got off to a good start after routing the Kingston Kobras 12-0. In the first inning, Spencer Krabi hit a single and stole third after Farrell singled as well. Aidan Hopkins opened the scoring with another single to bring Krabi home. Aidan Kilpatrick drove in Farrell and Hopkins. Offen pitched four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Krabi earned the save. The Sharks then faced West Carleton and had little difficulty after cruising to a 27-0 win that concluded after four innings. Sam Roy drew three walks, had one hit and scored four runs while lead-off hitter Liam Clements went three for three and also crossed the plate four times. Smith contributed with three homeruns. Advancing to the semifinal, the Sharks made quick work of Topham Park (Toronto) as they mercied them after five innings 20-1.
