She also uses the same expres- sive to describe her parents; her brother; her school; her church; her friends and her town. Emily Montesano of Stouï¬ville will be this year's recipient of the Student Music Scholarship award when St. James Presbyte- rian Church hosts the 22nd annual concert tomorrow at SDSS. (Zon- cert time is 7:30 pm. Adult admis- sion is $5. Musician/vocaliSt toast of this year’s concert Emily. 1?. daughter of Sam and Janet Montesano, received her ele- mentary education at Stnuffville’s St. Brigid Catholic School. Onrentering Grade 9, as a mem- ber of the junior band. a friend suggesged she play the oboe. '“At ï¬rst I fdund it challenging,†she says. “but soon grew to love it." Now with the senior wind sym- phony. it's her favourite instru- ment. She also plays the ukulele. the piano and the keyboard. In addition, Emily sings ï¬rst soprano with the school's Spartan Sound concert choir. "I owe it all to band director Diane Marian and choir director Miriam Sellick-Smith.†says Emily. She admits. however. it was Mar- latt's husband. David, who helped her immensely‘in Grade 9. “I' love both for different rea- sons,†she says. Time-wise. the two connections don't clash. Emily explains, since band practices are held one eve- ning each week and choir rehears- als take place during early morn- ings. As for making a choice between instrumental and vocal music. Emilyrrefuses to discriminate. The camaraderie enjoyed between students in both the band and the choir is fantastic. she says. She describes the male section of the choir as "awesome" with a bal- anced mix in the band. "Common interests bring us all together.†she said. But, she adds, all teachers are willing to help when help is requested. She's already submitied applica- tions to three universities: Queen’s, Trent and Waterloo. ' An honour student through three previous years. Emily’s hope- ful of receiving an Ontario scholar- ship on completion of grade 12. In addition to high school activities. Emily has other interests including youth and worship asso- ciations within Springvaie Bap- tist Church where she singles out youth pastors Alex Street and Ben Bartosik for exceptional praise. "They've shaped my faith." she says. She also applauds support received from her parents. "They've been_ super wonder- ful." she said. "never choosing to hold me back." For the past two summers Emin has assisted on the staï¬' at Lemon- ville's Willow Springs (lamp and on several occasions has sung the national anthem at Stouï¬ville Spir- it Jr. A hockey games. They're also ever-present, she says. should she have a problem. Emily's love of travel has taken her to several distant places. with future trips planned including Africa. As a teenager growing up in Stouï¬ville, Emily refuses to con- ceal her appreciation for what the town has to offer. “I absolutely love it here," she says. “this is where my heart is and where it will always be.†With respect to receiving tomor- row evening's music scholarship.
