Stouffville Sun-Tribune www.yorkregion.com Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, 22 SPORTS Late heroics, special teams power midgets to Oshawa championship The Stouffville Clippers rostered select major midgets brought home the gold from the 39th annual Heritage Tournament after downing the Etobicoke Bulldogs 4-1 in the championship final in Oshawa Sunday. Spotting the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, the Clippers came back to tie the game on a goal by Nick Lavalle. After killing off three five-on-three situations, the Clippers took advantage of a couple of power play opportunities to take a 3-1 lead on the strength of two goals from Nick LaFrance. With 10 seconds remaining in the contest, the Clippers rounded out the scoring with a goal from defenceman and captain Cam Nash when he tipped in a shot from Nate Kirkness. Tyler Asselin and Tyler Krabi also earned assists for the Clippers in the game. Alex Mackenzie played a solid game in goal to help preserve the win for the Clippers. The Clippers opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over the East York Bulldogs. John O'Boyle, Harrison Roy and Hunter Davidson each scored once for the Clippers. Assists were credited to Matt Armstrong, Eric Zambri, Nash and Roy. Patrick Coutts handled netminding duties. The Clippers then faced Acton and cruised to a 5-1 win. Krabi, LaFrance, O'Boyle, Roy and Zambri each scored once. Assists were credited to Armstrong, Asselin, Kirkness, Jason Rankin and Matt Whitehead. Facing Napanee in their third game, the Clippers had to win all three periods to receive the maximum number of points in order to beat out the Peterborough Petes and gain entry into the gold final. The Petes also went 3-0 in regular round robin, but lost a period to lose a point and qualify for the silver medal B finals. The Clippers were leading by a score of 4-0 but neither team had scored in the third period with three minutes remaining until Napanee was awarded a penalty shot and scored. With Napanee scoring, the Clippers faced being relegated to the B finals. But Clippers' head coach Peter O'Boyle elected to pull Coutts in favour of an extra attacker to try and get the point back. The Clippers responded as Armstrong rushed two pucks into the zone and set up Zambri as they scored twice, with the final marker occurring with one second left to propel them to the A final. Other Clippers goals were scored by Robert Muirhead with two, Krabi and LaFrance with one each. Assists went to Krabi, Lavalle, LaFrance, Jesse McSwiggan, O'Boyle, Jack Porter, Rankin and Whitehead. Assisting O'Boyle behind the bench were Gary Coutts, Geoff Roy and team manager Russ Whitehead. Michael Hayakawa Stouffville Churches Welcome You 6528 Main St., Stouffville 905-640-2561 Pastor Jim Amy STOUFFVILLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH Stouffville Rd. at Kennedy Rd.
