Sharks bite into tourney's bronze medals The Stouffville Sharks squirts and mites advanced to the consolation finals and claimed bronze medals in their respective divisions at the inaugural Sharks Summer Slam 2012 OSSTA Select Softball Tournament in Stouffville Saturday. The Sharks squirts earned their bronze medal with a 9-3 win over East Gwillimbury at Bethesda Park. Anchoring the club's success was their defence as they allowed just four base runners while their pitching struck out 11 batters. The Sharks opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over Bradford before suffering a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Grimsby in their second game. In a crossover game, the Sharks then faced the Unionville Spartans. Requiring a victory by a five-run margin to advance to the consolation finals, the Sharks accomplished that feat by scoring five runs in their final trip to the plate to emerge with an 11-6 victory. Coached by Steve Hopkins, Mike Farrell, Tom Brandon and Chris Offen, team members contributing to the club's bronze medal were: Liam Beauchamp, Mahaksh Patel, Braden Smith, Aidan Hopkins, Johnathon McCombe, Jordan Lewis, Evan Farrell, Nicolas Brandon, Mathew Offen and Ben Smith. Georgian Bay won the gold medal with a 20-0 win over Cambridge Rd. In the mites division, the Sharks defeated Springfield 17-7 in their consolation final at Memorial Park. The Sharks won their opening game over Bramalea 11-5 before falling 15-10 to Micksburg. Playing a crossover game against Springfield, the Sharks emerged with a 16-11 win and advanced to the consolation final for a rematch with Springfield. In the gold medal game, Topham Park defeated Micksburg 10-0. Griffith, Lucas Fasullo and Spencer Krabi, who hit the Yankees first grand slam of the season. In the second game, the Yankees cruised to an 18-2 victory. Starting pitcher Jayden Spylo picked up the win and was supported by strong relief pitching from Caleb Wannamaker. Krabi hit his second home run of the day and a two-run triple to power the Yankees' offence. Jordan Iainuzzielo and Max Hegenauer contributed with several key hits and Owen McKnight turned a double play, snaring a line drive and beating the runner back to second base. Coached by David Spylo, the Yankees are 8-5-1 on the season and continue their charge towards the York Simcoe Baseball Association playoff tournament Aug, 17 to 19 in Stouffville. In the first game, the Yankees held off Muskoka in a last inning rally with Peter Karanopoulos coming into pitch and earning the save to lead the Yankees to a 12-11 win. Powering the Yankees to a lead were key home runs by Mitchell Risto, Chris Temelkovski, David Yustin fifth in CJGA event Matthew Yustin finished fifth in his age group at the Canadian Junior Golf Association's International Junior Challenge Qualifier at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Georgetown. Competing in the boys 14 and under division, the Gormley resident ended the two-round competition 15 over par at 155 (76-79).
