NEIGHBOURING M CENTRES For instance, the Whitchurch- Stouffville Minor Hockey Associa- tion is a single-A calibre centre. Its players would be eligible to com- pete for positions with doubleâ€"A teams in neighbouring areas includ- ing Markham, Aurora, Newmarket or Richmond Hill. Players from double-A centres though, could not move horizon- tally to another centre below the triple-A level. “Overall, [think it’s good," OMHA executive director Richard Ropchan said of the vote. “The thinking is players in double-B centres and below that are late cuts at triple-A have another option to try out at a higher level. That means a chance to play and develop at a level at BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA mhayakawa@yrmg.com In a move that has been antici- pated for months, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association's board of directors has voted to relax its long-standing residency policy and permit more players to play minor hockey outside their home com- munities. And because a garage door plays a big part in the appearance and functionality of your home, we think it's good news that the industry has come a long way. Ten years ago, all that was available was about four colours and three window choices. Today, as a Richards- Wilcox dealer, we can now offer more than 10 panel styles, more than 10 colour choices and 15 or more window styles - hundreds of combinations to suit your every need. If you’re in the market for a new garage door, let our professional sales staff come out to show you all the options as well as the quality engineering and workmanship in our products. If you want to see your door in person, we can show it to you. Our installations in the Markham-Stouffville area serve as the largest showroom we can offer as testimonials to our work and products. When shopping for a new door, be sure to ask where it’s made. We're proud to offer Richards-Wilcox products made in Mississauga, Ontario. While we have a variety of different brands, our experience tells us Richards- Wilcox is the best. Engineered for Life Don Easter, ' Whitchurch- Stouffville Minor Hockey Associa- tion president, said if such a pro- posal were to come into efiect it must be voted upon by the OMHA’s members. “It’s creating a buzz and I think a positive buzz, so we’ll see where it goes," Ropchan said. “Right now, we’re doing baby steps. It’s a small percentage of kids we feel need to be afforded that opportunity.” While details are far from estab- lished, Ropchan said the policy could be in place for the 2011â€"12 season. Among the details‘ Easter would like to see clarified are the pos- sible restrictions or limitations on player movement which have been advanced in relation to any rule change. "These would include quotas for doubleâ€"A and single-A centres on the number of non-resident play- ers, and a limitation on the number of double-A or single-A teams a nonâ€"resident player could try out for," he said. As for his feelings on the pro- posed change, Easter said there’s positives and negatives to it. With Whitchurch-Stouffi/ille classified as a single-A centre, a sig- which they are capable of playing.” Centres are classified by popula- tion. door, used by both young and old family members, it must exemplify good construction and industry- leading safety standards. With all-metal construction â€" as opposed to plastic parts and pieces on many other brands - we know our doors will hold up. Stouffville Garage Doors offers a warranty that lasts as long as you own your home. “You really have to be careful of the fine print you can find in the warranties of our competitors and their big-brand, cheaply-made products,” says Stouffville Garage Doors owner Simon Jones. “The Richards-Wilcox warranty, as the company approaches its 100th anniversary, is one of the many reasons we feel confident in the product. It's hard to find a real warranty these days.” Whether you’re in the market for a new door or looking for a reliable company to service your existing door, Stouffville Garage Doors would love to help. “Anybody can start a business and last a couple of years with a get in â€" get paid â€" get out mentality, but for more than 20 years Stouffville Garage Doors has offered hard work, honesty, quality products and extraordinary service to the Markham-Stouffville area," says Simon. “Talk to your friends and neighbours and chances are you'll get a good referral for Stouffville Garage Doors." Stouffville Garage Doors is located at 64 Sandiford Drive, Unit 12, call 905-642-3217 nificant number of players in the past have honed their skills in the association to the point where they were able to compete successfully for positions on triple-A teams in other centres. “On one hand we’re sorry to see them go; but on the other hand, we see their success as a testimonial to the strength of our program," he said. Helping to enhance the competâ€" itiveness of Wlfltchurchâ€"Stouflvflle entries has been the recent opening of the Clippers' Complex twin-ice pad facility. ’ At this stage, Easter said their association needs to be convinced the proposed changes to the resi- dency rules ofiers their members any significant added value. In the past, Easter cited Clippers’ entries have played on equal foot- ing with double-A ranked rivals. “Several years ago, our Clippers’ bantam A team was ranked sec- ond compared to all the bantam double-A teams in the province," he cited of a team he once coached. “on-ice results for both our single-A and AE programs have been improving each year and would place Stouflville among the top handful of single-A centres in Ontario from a competitive stand- point.” “The addition of two new ice ' “or: : l ILABOURI 'ON ALL REPAIRS' ' 176mm,», Humans-294m ' pads has allowed us to virtually double the practice time available to our rep teams this season and means they have as much or more skill development opportunity as most double-A or triple-A teams," he said. At the same time, though, should a residency rule change result in any significant loss of players to double-A teams the ability of Clip- pers' rep teams to compete going forward could be impacted. LOCAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT “Since Stouffville borders on four centres offering double-A pro- grams, like Markham, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Newmarket, we are potentially more vulnerable to player movement than some of the more geographically remote centres with which we compete. This is a potentially significant negative for our organization," Easter noted. “Once we have a more complete picture of the proposed changes we will provide our members with opportunities to make their views known and give our board some direction in representing these views to the OMHA," he said. In the meantime, Easter said their organization will closely monitor the process and keep their members informed as more infor- mation becomes available.
