BY MIKE HAYAKAWA Staff Writer When the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans senior girls' basketball team began preparations for their York Region Athletic Associaâ€" tion tier one season, head coach Sharon MacFarlane did not set goals for her charges. Without club players, National baseball title 5055 must be versatile for Stouffville oldtimers There was no talk of winning the regional title. Nor was anything men- tioned about ï¬nishing ï¬rst in the ï¬ve-team East Division that includes Markham District, St. Augustine, Richmond Green and St. Robert. The only request Mac- Farlane made of her troops was that they perform with consistency. If the Spartans can do that, she feels the number of victories should out- number the setbacks. “The last couple of years has been a struggle for our program. But I think we’re a better team this year," MacFarlane said. “Sure we would like to make the playoffs. But I didn’t set any goals for our team. I just want for us to play as consistent as we Noting her club has never been blessed with If you are alone. have no place to have a thanksgiving dinner, or you just want to come, we invite you to share a Special Thanksgiving with us the week after Thanksgi_v_i_r_Ig Free Thanksgil/Lng Service Sunday Oct. 19 @ 11am at THE CHURCH 6273 Main Street (beside the gazebo creek in beautiful downtown Stouffville) Call for your seats 905-640-291 1 Full Turkey Dinner the large number of club players enjoyed by other schools, Macl‘arlane is relying on students who excel in other sports to carry the load. She can go with a lineup of seven to eight players. Among those expected to play an integral role are guards Nicole Kiatipis and Tracey Veletri, forwards Brittany Crago and les- sica Veletri along with post players Natalie Kondovski and Amanda Raguseo. While the Spartans have played just one league game, an ugly 19-18 road loss to St. Augustine Sept. 29, MacFarlane hopes the unusually long gap before their second contest yes- terday at Markham District served as a blessing. The time 05 between games was put to good use in getting their offensive and defensive schemes in order. So far, she likes the progress her club has made. “They’re a solid group of kids and they’ve been chomping at the bit between games to get their schedule going. I think we’re as ready as we can be," she said. Rev. David Daniels 7:00 pm and Hilltop Vocal Band Evegxone Welcome! There are hometown national baseball champions. '“ Stouffville residents Bill Johnâ€" son and Ross Hill were members of an Oakville Golden A's team that won the 44 and over division in the 2008 Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Federation Championship. Their team successfully defended their title in Harnilton by defeating Spring Lakes, Alta., 6-0 in the title tilt. The A's also defeated Spring Lakes in last year’s ï¬nal that was held in Red Deer, Alta., 3-0. “It was nice to win last year because it was the ï¬rst title for Ross and myself.†said Johnson, 50, who patrols centre ï¬eld while Hill, 51, plays left ï¬eld and was their designated hitter. “But it’s always nice to win it.†Eï¬en more satisfying to John- son, though, is that the game he plays is baseball. Being 50 years old, Johnson said it's often assumed that peo- ple who reach his age group tend to play a version of the game at a more relaxed pace. “This wasn’t slo-pitch or soft- ball. Playing baseball makes you feel like you’re a teenager where you’re running the bases. That’s what’s great about it;" he said. springvale )>.l="cu 02‘ >J.}:(h .x>~(I 9:565.
