After graduating from the University of Guelph, he became a successful dairy and beef farmer (member of the Holstein-Freisian Asso- ciation of Canada). In the late 1950's he and Muriel settled into growing sod for a living. Howard was a founding member and president of the Nursery Sod Growers Association. He was in- strumental in the industry for over 40 years. Howard had a wonderful life and travelled the world with Muriel, she was his Queen. He was an avid hunter, hunting ducks geese on Goose Lake (at the Tamarack Hunt Club and deer at the cottage hunt club. He was an avid fisherman, making numerous trips to the Arctic sourcing hot spots on Lake of Bays, in both summer winter. His, love of nature, his dogs and watching: birds from the kitchen window will .always be remembered. In the spring and summer he tended to his large vegetable garden that he planted, ‘hoed harvested every year, including this year. He spent his later years enjoying his cottage on Lake of Bays surrounded by friends and family. He taught his children a work ethic like no other and instilled, in his grandchildren, a sense of self. He was a kind and generous man who made many contri- butions to the community. A gentleman who never minced words but was always there to lend an ear and give great wisdom. Howard touched many lives in the Markham Area and we will all miss his little white truck driving around town stopping in for a quick visit. At the family's request. there will be a private family service. An open house will be held at Fairwood Farms, 6350 Steeles Avenue East on Saturday October 4, 2008 from 12:00 to 4:00.
