BY JESSICA YOUNG Staff Writer York Region is expecting to save $2 million in the next seven years by shifting its recycled glass processing to a new plant in Brampton. “These savings in our waste management portfolio are both welcome and need- ed,” York Region chairperson Bill Fisch said. The savings are made pos- sible because they’ve nabbed a better market price com- pared to other areas, due to their agreement to, partner in the new glass facility, York’s diversion manager Mike Birett said. Mixed broken glass from the blue box program is to be taken to the new plant. Students have 500 words in which they can address one of two topics; how mari- juana grow operations afiect the broader community; and how Ontario’s building practices can be adjusted to compensate for the extreme They wanted to demon- strate the impact of higher learning and felt the best way to do so was to get stu- dents to think about the communities they live and work in, said board presi- dent Maureen O’Neill. BY DAVID FLEISCHER Staff Writer Local high school stuâ€" dents are beginning to think about making the leap to university and the Toronto Real Estate Board is hop- ing its scholarship program gives them a chance to flex their intellectual muscles. The board offers schol- arships of $5,000 for the upcoming school year to two local students based upon an essay submission. Together they will save an estimated $10 million dollars throughout the length of the deal. washed and labels removed. Glass is gn'nded into specific sizes and then sorted and grinded again to specific product requirements. “The market for this material is fibre glass, proâ€" duction of tiles in the con- struction industry and cullet (raw materials that go back into making glass materials again)," Mr. Birett said. Starting this summer, recycled glass is being shipped to the new $10 mil- lion facility instead of having materials hauled to Syracuse, NY and Montreal. A $1.75 million grant to Unical makes it possible for the purchase of processing equipment. The grant comes from Stewardâ€" ship Ontario, a waste funding organization. “I’m hoping it will get all the young people interested in these significant matters and it will evolve into some- thing.” weather resulting from glob- al winning. . The subject matter is potentially daunting, but Ms O'Neill hopes it will get our community's young people thinking. “I’m hoping that it will snowball and get (the issues) into schools and give them an awareness of these issues," she said. r The deadline for applica- tions is April 15 and you can learn more about the program by clicking the "scholarship" link at torontorealestateboard. com
