Council will be considering amendments to the Town‘s Procedural By-law, which governs the proceedings of Council. Representatives of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) presented Council with an update on its activities to address electricity supply issues in northern York Region; The CPA is responsible for ensuring an adequate, long-term supply of electricity in Ontario, and to coordinate conservation and electricity supply from diverse resources. The presentation highlighted the increasing demand for electricity in York“ Region and challenges with transformer and distribution line capacity among others. The OPA’s Integrated Power System Plan aims to address these issues in an integrated manner by identifying opportunities for investment in new power generation while facilitating conservation programs. Council authorized an application for $930,000 in grant funding from Infrastructure Ontario’s Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative. If approved, the grant funding will be allocated for a portion of the cost to renovate of 19 Civic Avenue, Nineteen on the Park.’, an arts and cultural facility in downtown Stouffville. The grant application will be evaluated by Infrastructure Ontario in a competitive manner. It was noted that February, 2008 was proclaimed Lions Club Month in Whitchurch-Stouffville in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Stouffville Lions Club. The Stouffville Lions Club has been actively involved in a number of important community development, fundraising and charitable causes over the course of their history. The Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative is a $300 million, one-time funding program that is designed to support investment in local infrastructure in municipalities across Ontario. The total project cost for Nineteen on the Park! is approximately $3.4 million, 50% of which is to be funded by the Town with the balance being comprised of community fundraising initiatives and government grants.
