aug 22 about the conservation dam mr sanderson who is manager of the stouffville pool ex pressed concern over the use of this area for swimming he presen ted his arguments recently to the towns recreation committee and repeated them before council he suggested that council approach the conservation auth ority to request the site be developed for recreational use pointing out that the place is now being used for swimming mr sanderson termed the practice highly dangerous he cited the open spillway as the number one danger area drawings prepared by mr sanderson proposed development of a park area southeast of the dam with a- beach on the lakes east side washrooms changing facilities and guard towers would be needed part of this land is rapidly becoming a swamp mr san derson told council it could be an ex ceptional area for swimming he stated that anywhere from 30 to 70 swimmers are using the dam now if developing it is premature something should be done to prevent such use to avoid death or injury to people he said mayor ken laush- way reviewed the history of this facility from 1959 when it was first proposed although it took ten years he said stouffville finally gained this dam to control flooding throughout the town and al minimal cost to local ratepayers the design of the dam would have to be completely changed said the mayor weve always wanted t make it into a park but that would cost a fortune you can do these things if you have the money for them he had some sharp words for the con servation authority which is responsible fcr operation of the dam that thing is supposed to be empty or nearly empty he stated it has to be if its to do the job it was intended to do if we had heavy rain today that dam wouldnt help us a bit the mayor stated that he had been in touch with ken higgs of the metropolitan toronto conservation authority mr higgs will be visiting the facility and mayor laushway predicted that it would be drained within a day mr sanderson observed that the lake has been full all summer and has been used for swimming councillor betty varnostrand tended to support mr san dersons plan i dont see any harm in this council approaching the authority to put the proposal to them she said theyre the ones responsible they should say whether this will be done or not i dont disagree that the site should be used for recreation when the time comes replied the mayor but i feel its very premature at present id like to hear that from the conservation authority said councillor van- nostrand it was agreed that mayor laushway will invite officials to a council meeting at which lime mr san derson will put the proposal to them goodwood kartways national races goodwood the national go kart races at goodwood kartways cone 2 uxbridge sept
