offer rejected ont cty the ontario county board salary offer to teachers would provide for ap proximately a half million dollar total increase above regular increments for the 914 secondary school teachers employed by the ontario county board of education this offer will not be recommended for approval bv the osstfs neg otiating team to their membership basic salaries would range from a minimum of 7200 to a maximum of 10300 for a classroom teacher proposed salary increases per teacher would range from a minimum of 500 to a maximum of 1400 the total salary offer including the regular increment represents an average increase of slightly under 8 percent this offer takes into ac count the increase in the cost of living during the pist year and provides ad ditional increases as well the teachers are demanding a further increase of at least 120000 for the leaching year 197273 of which 50000 would be applicable to the calendar year 1972 the board salary committee has in dicated that it is not in a position to move further in terms of the total dollar value of the present offer mrs m odonnell chairman of the board com mittee emphasized that this position is based on serious consideration of the budget implications and expenditure ceilings for the calendar vears 1972 and 1973 the board is anxious i o continue negotiations but sees no way of making a greater sum available for salary increases and therefore hopes that the teachers will reconsider their request in the light of the financial restrictions under which the board must operate collect 1320 donations to the heart fund for 1972 from stouffville total 1320 according to field coordinator mrs pal ogston toronto the cam paign here was headed by mrs donald petrie edward street unionville when alf hill accepted his first teaching position back in 1927 the school near redbridge ont 19 miles from north bay had an enrollment of 28 pupils his salary was 885 per year in addition to regular teaching chores he served as school caretaker board secretary township assessor and tax collector two of the trustees could neither read nor write i resigned seven times between sep tember and christ mas he recalled harry jermyn now a provincial judge at whitby had a similar school in the same district they often walked the distance from north bay together i can still remember hearing the wolves howling in the bush he said and for a greenhorn that wasnt funny so it was when dr arthur kennedy of unionville issued a verbal invitation for alf hill to join the staff at old no 10 no lengthy consideration was required he remained there until i960 then assumed the principalship at park view also in union ville where the reception was held saturday alf hill estimates that in the past 44 years he has graduated over 3500 students despite the length of his teaching career mr hill doesnt look on himself as old fashioned ive done my best to keep up with the times he said he still stresses the basics reading writing and arith metic and he frowns on classroom per missiveness while the im personal approach to school operation today is not fully appreciated by principal hill he offers no criticism of
