pae 2 the tribune thursday may 13 1971 wxt wttbwxt established 1888 c h nolan publisher ji31 thomas editor published every thursday by inland publishing co limited at 54 main st stouffville ont tel 6502101 single copies 13c subscriptions 500 per year in canada 900 elsewhere member of audit bureau of circulation canadian weekly newspapers association and ontario weekly newspapers association second class mail registration number 0s96 editorial organized recreation in six weeks close to 1000 elementary school students in the former village of stouffville will be leaving classes for the start of the summer vacation period for a few days at least the satisfaction of being free from the 9 to 330 routine will be satisfaction enough but this kind of freedom will soon turn to boredom unless some organized form of recreation is established here so far other than a swim program at the pool and a hopedfor lacrosse schedule in the arena everything else has fallen flat one of the main problems of course is finance it costs money to hire a recreation director and there are those who will question the benefits derived from such an experiment last season but the fact remains stouffville needs someone at least on a part time basis to serve in this capacity and proceeds from the july 1 sports day should cover at least a portion of the cost it is our opinion that there are many folks in the community who would gladly assist once something is started but theyre not organizers they dont pretend to be someone must be hired specifically to fill such a position the time to hire that someone is now at a public meeting called april 26 to set up two fastball house leagues and three allstar teams only four persons attended and you guessed it they were four of the same who had just completed seven months of work with the minor hockey little wonder they discouraged are oneforall campaign doortodoor canvassing has reached a new peak in the whitchurchstouffville area this year givings have also set new records but residents are growing a little weary and no wonder it seems hardly a week goes by that someone isnt seeking assistance for one organization or another and while most folks feel obligated to give something there has to be a limit on this continual call for funds we would suggest a oneforall cam paign a single community drive or red feather if you like in which several organizations would benefit associations that do not qualify would still be able to conduct their own cam paigns but at least the numbers of calls would be greatly reduced and on the same subject we feel one walkathon or bikeathon per community is also sufficient repeat calls for sponsors particularly on projects outside the area can soon turn a fun thing into an an noyance stirring the pot the now treasurer and minister of economics in the davis cabinet hon darcymckeough has been quoted in a recent interview that century city is indeed not dead even though the concept does not conform with proposals con tained in the torontocentred region design for development plan naturally after so long a silence such a comment or any comment at all leaning towards the affirmative sends hopes soaring in the minds of many that this massive 7000 acre venture may eventually become a reality but is there just reason for optimism or is mr mckeough and other ministers on the inside merely using this type of tactic to keep the pot bubbling yet not boil over it was back on may 5 1970 that the then premier of ontario john robarts first introduced the governments develop ment plan however in doing so he left the door open for changes requesting submissions either by personal ap pointment or by mail this deadline was set for sept 30 that was more than seven months ago and still nothing not a yes not a no only a maybe but maybes do not make a city only a rural slum if its the intent of queens park to starve the developers into submission another seven months of stalling should be sufficient editow mail sir is there anything that can be done either by residents of whitchurchstouff ville or by me as an individual with regard to the fantastic rates currently charged by ontario hydro ronald w pascoe stouffville rr2 editors note ontario hydro reports no change in the rate structure a check on your complaint is being made through the area office at newmarket dear sir i am very upset since reading your editorial may 6 on a proposed youth hostel for hagerman school of course it would be foolish to think that riffraff could be kept out but surely such reasoning neglects the whole purpose of establishing hostels they are meant to provide some kind of assistance to a segment of very confused and helpless young people i have worked with young drugusers and am well aware of the huge gap between the tragic reality of this problem and the absolute lack of awareness of most people these young people are dirty promiscuous and i suppose the riffraff of society they are also hopeless confused frightened and alone but these problems have been created by our society these drugusers are as much the victims of life as the victims of poverty and disease we cannot call them bad guys and consign them to eternal damnation in such a wholehearted and easy way to help them as much as possible is our human duty to refuse them this help will only increase the problem it seems to me this most ostentatiously christian community has forgotten the most basic human law to be loved one must first be loved i am in favor of any measure that might be of help to these young people lynn sherwood rr 2 markham editors note the hostel at hagerman was not in my opinion supposed to serve as any kind of drugtreatment centre it was only to provide overnight ac commodation for young people travelling across the province or across the country during the summer vacation period my fear was that it would be used by drug pushers as a prime sales outlet for their product dear mr thomas in the tribune issue of april 29 1 read where the twp of pickering had received requests for permission to establish land fill sites in that municipality at rights of spring by bill smiley its only when youre dying that you truly appreciate living and im dying right now dont scoff i mean it youll be sorry next week when this column appears as a blank white space with a heavy black border around it i dont want any eulogies in that white space at least nothing fancy nothing like here lies a noble soul torn from this earth before his time his words were nothing but his soul sublime no i don really want that sort of thing although it was my first suggestion as i lay gasping for breath trying to choke down the rye and hot water and honey and lemon juice that somebody had suggested to my wife might save me we compromised after some discussion concerning how much a letter because cur area uxbridgereach is more remote i feel similar applications will be received dp you not feel that present pit locations should be frozen until queens park reaches a decision on this very important matter i fear that zone 2 will become a service area for metro airports dumps pits and power lines under the guise of green belt loretta mcnab chalk lake earned his pay a payduty constable attended the may prom at stouffville dist secondary school friday a common practice at such functions however he neglected to bring along his ear plugs as the night wore on and the crescendo of the music increased he could be seen edging closer and closer to the outside exit the tombstone man charges and i will say this for my wife she wiped my forehead and brought me cups of tea while she sorted through my insurance policies we settled on after all bill knew hed die so do you it wasnt quite what i had in mind but i dont quibble about these things and i did like the last line also we saved 36780 on the lettering thats almost enough to buy an automatic dishwasher lets put first things first theres been a lot written about the rights of spring poetry music and stuff like that to be dying of the flu is one of the rights of spring in canada its one of the few inalienable rights we have left oh there are other rights of spring in this country but theyre becoming polluted like everything else theres the right to go trout fishing on opening day this was once an in definable and inexplicable delight nowadays its about as thrilling as climbing onto a subway train at rush hour theres the right to go out and shovel and sweep backonto the road all the sand the snowblower has thrown up on your lawn during the winter this has a ten dency to pall after the first five or six years theres the right to cheat on your in come tax this used to be day rigerre as we used to say but so many people are doing it now that its passay as we say now there are all sorts of other spring rights like giving birth to twin lambs going for a swim as soon as the ice goes out or discovering that your kid has quit university a week before final exams but were not all cut out for these things theyre scr of spotty the only spring right that has not been interfered with by government big business labour unions or the womens lib is the ordinary canadians spring right of dying from the flu i think its probably the last spring right well have in perpetuity and i fflmlrte orbunp remembered by jim thomas how was your mothers day i hope you took time to remember a small gift a card or even a telephone call it means so much i remembered both my own mother to whom i owe more than any amount of money can ever repay and my wife the t fulltime mother of five plus the care of one husband who at times is more dependent on her help than even the youngest of the brood the truth is im so dependent on her assistance i now refuse to purchase anything personal surprise or not unless ifirst ask her outright exactly what she wants i started practicing this policy last christmas after eleven years of disap- i pointments frustrations and takebacks r for instance i wonder how many of you men have ever gone shopping for those intimate little things carried ex- clusively by ladies wear shops em barrassing isnt it i did it just once but never again the girdle i selected would have better enhanced the form of a mother ar- madillo now to avoid a similar mistake in size she phones the order in or writes the statistical information down on a small piece of paper the latter method is simple just hand the clerk the slip grab the parcel and go no red faces on either side of the counter and slacks jeans always wanting slacks but how a husbands supposed to know the make and model is a mystery to me what i did or used to do was find someone my wifes approximate size in the store and buy accordingly the last pair would have lapped the bottom of an elephant and pantyhose those new fandangled t silk stocking combinations that roll right up to the waist there are so many shades it makes a guys head spin and its hardly fair to ask the clerk to try them on but its tempting however for me this shot in the dark business is over its ask first buy later and its working out quite well but even foolproof methods can present their problems for example saturday i dropped into hudsons florists on main street for three pots of philodendron for non- horticulturalists theyre a kind of broad- leaf climber suitable for hallway mantels a few years ago we cultivated a veritable forest of them but suddenly they all died and the areas looked i terribly bare ever since from the florists i went over to aikens pharmacy to select a suitable card and then on down to houstons pharmacy for a few per sonal odds and ends for myself the grand opening of gifts followed i supper sunday each regardless of its amateur status was greeted by a series of ohs and ahs cathys was a gold- painted macaroni cup shed made it in kindergarten pauls was a cardboard cutout covered with flowers he made it in grade 1 barrys was a large ginger ale bottle painted with a stroke of modern art it could be used for a vase he made it in grade 2 susans was a lovely box of chocolates with the top containing a yellow imitation rose corsage she had robbed her piggy bank to make the purchase then came mine the air was electric with excitement and anticipation as mom loosened the scotch tape and peered into the package gulp one can of shaving cream and five razor blades whens fathers day think its fitting that we should practically anybody can die of prac tically anything these days according to the experts and theyre probably right though i have yet to know an expert to be right about anything but to die of the flu every spring is something thats fairly precious to us canadians and i hope the advertising agencies dont catch on to it or theyll spoil the whole doleful business cant you see the ads come to canada for a new thrill in stant influenza probably sponsored by drink canada dry and relax with canadian club the yanks would flock in dont let them lets keep something for our mess of pottage im dying of the flu and i dont want a bunch of tourists horning in
