second class mail registration number 0s96 editorial lot fees make sense some members of whitchurch- stouffville planning committee have expressed alarm over a 900 lot fee charge recommended by the york county board of education in the proposed 450home dulverton development while the suggested figure may indeed be high the policy we feel is practical looking at the scheme from the boards point of view the subdivision when completed could produce close to 1000 children one thousand children could con ceivably require a 25 room school a twentyfive room school could cost an estimated sli million dollars who should cover this expense we say the development that created it and at 900 a lot the burden on the rest of us would be lightened considerably not so fast by the time this appears the fate of several small one and tworoom rural schools in the town of whitchurch- stouffville and the twp of king may have been decided we hope not for we feel members of the york county board of education are foolish if they attempt to railroad this program through first the board should consider the kind of people theyre dealing with the opinions of these parents are not based solely on grounds of nostalgia a refusal to break with customs of the past for many of them quite the opposite they are urban oriented folk associated with the benefits and problems of both systems and they have given reasons good reasons for retaining the system now employed their strength in both names and numbers should not be ignored in the case of schools at vivian and shrubmount we would suggest the board leave well enough alone at least until it knows for certain where its going with additional rooms already planned for the school at ballantrae perhaps as some parents have recommended this is the logical location for a central learning centre pine orchard pupils could also be accommodated there to bus these children to a new school in newmarket and then at a later date switch them back to ballantrae would in our opinion be an inexcusable error many of these boys and girls it seems have already been switched around too often dont expect miracles should council meetings be confined to the council chambers or should they be held in communities where particular issues are of interest or concern to residents of particular areas in the twp of pickering members have been toying with such a recom mendation for some time some feel that since ratepayers refuse to attend meetings the meetings should be taken to the ratepayers we say that in theory the suggestion sounds good in practice however the proposal will accomplish nothing as shameful as it may seem the majority of people just arent interested and those that are usually for personal reasons the drive to the present quarters presents no real problem whitchurchstouffville is we feel a good example council meetings are still held in what was the former village of stouffville prior to amalgamation few stouffville folks ever attended they still dont but quite a number of the rural residents do without complaint they are not asking that the meeting locations be switched to lemonville dicksons hill or vandorf no if they have problems and they want answers theyll gladly take those problems to where the an swers lie and thats the way it should be no council can force municipal politics on its people its been tried before without success editor 9 mail dear sir the red cross society of the region of york has been in the process of organizing a red cross homemaker service this service as you know is a very important one and is of tremendous value to the communities of the region it means that now we can be of assistance to people in time of illness and family crisis in that we can send a homemaker into a home to take over the respon sibilities of the family concerned our fees are reasonable and our homemakers are well trained to meet any emergency may i please ask through the medium of your newspaper that you make it known that this service is now available and that we will do our utmost to fill the needs of those requiring it our office is located at 80 bayview avenue newmarket and the telephone number is 8951341 thank you rm rank supervisor red cross homemaker service 80 bayview avenue newmarket dear mr thomas i copied this article from the barrie examiner and i thought it might prove interesting to readers of the tribune one of the most widelyread books of all time is the decline and fall of the roman empire it sets forth five basic reasons why that civilization withered and died these are 1 the un dermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home which is the basis for human society 2 higher and higher taxes the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace 3 the mad craze for pleasure sports becoming every year more exciting more brutal more immoral 4 the building of great armaments when the real enemy was within the decay of individual responsibility 5 the decay of religion faith fading into mere form losing touch with life losing power to guide the people it vaguely rings a bell does it not doris mrs fg ratcliff stouffville rr 4 dear sir the historical society of markham deserve much credit for the planning and the hard work that has gone into the creation and maintenance of our museum i am appealing to the residents of the town of markham to support this worth while endeavour by donating or loaning articles which relate to the history of this area so that they may be displayed at the museum and thus preserved for sugar and spice proud ones suffer in new hard times by bill smiley for most people and especially for canadians spring is usually a time of hope the ice and snow have gone or are going the days are lengthening the sun is strengthening the world is coming alive again with the first hints of new growth but for a great many people in this land of ours this spring offers little but doubt and despair there is a dark shadow lying across this relatively clean country of ours its name is unemployment for the first time in a generation canada this vast and wealthy country is facing the hard facts that its economy is in rough shape thousands of university graduates will be scrambling for the jobs that will ab sorb half of them thousands of students will be competing for jobs for a quarter of them thousands of skilled workers will be ready to try anything to make a living maybe it hasnt caught up with you yet but it could in my town we had a boom about three years ago new industries came in new subdivisions were developed real estate soared new families moved in for all the new jobs and the population increased this spring the industries are hob bling its tough to sell a house and men who have worked well and hard for 10 or 15 years are laid off and looking for work taxes the tribune received the following few lines from an anonymous ratepayer last week that probably speaks for many bless the council one to six who put us in a terrible fix april 15 dawned bright and clear but the mail brought gloom for one whole year interimouterim what does it mean glorious confusion it would seem installments numbered one and two no cause to make you feel real blue just wait for numbers three and four then come and pick me off the floor taxes taxes all the time brother can you spare a dime posterity each article may be suitably labelled with the donors name if you desire this if you have any appropriate con tribution please contact mr john lunau museum curator 2944463 or better still drop in at the museum vh miles north of hwy 7 on hwy 48 and enjoy a guided tour from 130 530 pm weekdays except monday then i feel you will appreciate more what a worthwhile project this is norman tyndall council ward 6 town of markham the signs are familiar i was only a kid during the worst years of the depression but i remember my father had a prosperous business he went broke because people didnt have the money to buy what he was selling or couldnt pay for what they did buy middleaged late forties he didnt stand a chance when there were hun dreds of thousands of young men looking for anything he was a gentle man and a proud one and it broke his heart he wound up selling coffins on commission no expenses pay your own try that sometime during a depression my mother was made of stern stuff and with five children she knew it was a situation where pride and dignity had to go by the board she patched and she mended and she sewed and she darned she took in boarders and we kids doubled up she sold home baking she went out and knocked on doors selling cosmetics to women who couldnt afford a box of face powder what it cost her i can only imagine but somehow we staggered through going on relief was a disgrace to her and we never fell that low she invented new culinary triumphs like potatoskin hash when there was no meat and porridge soup when there was no meal or vegetables today going on relief or welfare doesnt seem to bother many people in fact for many it is a way of life and they feel no opprobrium or discomfort their attitude is that the world owes them a living no matter how stupid or useless or lazy they are but its the proud ones who are hurt a friend of mine was a production manager working in big industry he was a good one suddenly his job didnt exist hes tried with all his energy for months to find something theres nothing hes bitter last week i got a letter from a chap who is desperate hes sixty was laid off from a responsible job in industry has used up his unemployment insurance and savings and doesnt know where to turn he wants a job but knows the odds against him other countries including those with almost no natural resources are flourishing canada with massic natural resources is withering on the vine how come perhaps the root of the problem is that our leaders are talking out of both sides of their mouths at once one side spouts free enterprise the other socialism and we are left with one foot in the boat and the other on shore as the boat drifts quietly away from the land its becoming an acutely uncomfortable position and somebody else is going to be acutely uncomfortable in the near future if somebody doesnt grab an oar abqunt a splash party amen by jim thomas theres an organization within our church commonly known as adult fellowship its open to all grownups within the congregation and visitors too if they care to come gatherings are held monthly ex cluding the summer vacation period and occasionally just occasionally we embark on some pretty daring escapades like the night in february we travelled via film all the way to etheopia unfortunately i missed the trip arriving only in time for refreshments then there was the skating excursion to cedarena for some that was a pretty daring experience too but this months program takes the cake the committee has arranged a kind of communal splash party at slaters pool its got everybody talking all real excited all that is except me the very thought of it fills me with fear maybe i can be sick or something its not that i hold an intense dislike for water although to me the swimming pool kind is invariably too cold and its not that i dont enjoy swimming although i swim like a stone its merely the thought of appearing in public and among church folk no less bared to the waist both ways that drives me wacky now if i was built like the legendary charles atlas it wouldnt be so bad but im not however when ushering at the door or passing the plate the old blue serge suit with the padded shoulders tends to hide a lot it also boosts my ego but stripped down to a scanty pair of trunks the reality of my physique is revealed and what a revelation yet thats what theyll see on the sundays to follow not me as i once was but me as i really am ill never live it down to make matters worse jean my wife thinks the swimin idea is great despite the fact she hasnt got a thing to wear this would leave one to conclude she either anticipates buying a new bathing suit or shes going topless woops our fellowship just sank out of sight an open letter to a school bus driver you are a lady i dont know your name i dont know your address i do know that you are the driver of a school bus one of those yellow lumbering vehicles that are seen everywhere bet ween the hours of 3 and 5 pm on your shoulders and in your hands rests the responsibility for the safe delivery of fifty boys and girls twice a day five days a week in your work there is no margin for error one mistake could cost many lives your record like most in your line is probably perfect im envious in past weeks i have expounded in the tribune on the need for care and caution when meeting following or passing a vehicle such as yours i have criticized the impatient motorist who would dare to take a chance i have also condemned the careless motorist who would dare to disobey a signal but people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones i drove past a stopped school bus last week and its bothered me ever since you were the driver i can still see your face i can still hear your horn but i saw and heard it too late i couldnt stop the unpardonable driving error oc curred west of the ringwood church on what is commonly called the stouffville road you were headed west i was going east the glare of the sun blotted out the flash of your lights but that was no excuse i had my mind on something else i jammed on the brakes but it was no use fortunately no students had started to cross fortunately for them and fortunately for me i know the thoughts that must have gone through your mind at that moment i know the words you must have mut tered and i dont blame you a bit for i was guilty of an offense that should cost me a fine it could have cost someone their life it wont happen again the editor
