the police commission feb 9 at exactly 1100 am the negotiating team from the police association disappeared into a closed session with the commission fortyfive minutes later they emerged with a contract that will give the majority of police officers pay increases of almost 10 percent under the new wage contract 1st class constables will receive an annual salary of 10250 second third and fourth class constables will receive 9855 9460 and 9040 per annum respectively substantial pay increases for the higher ranks have been agreed upon as well patrol sergeants and detectives will now earn 12680 annually sergeants and detective sergeants 13109 and inspectors 13906 george hepple president of the 200 member police association and head of the 4- man bargaining team told the tribune he was very pleased with the outcome things went over smoothly he said it was a pleasure to negotiate with the commission and i feel we have a good working relationship wage increases in the 1971 contract are retroactive to jan 1 in response to questions from reporters mr hepple said that the one year contract had been ratified unanimously by the association membership before it was approved by the com mission the only group to be excluded from a share in the general prosperity are the acting chiefs the police association doesnt bargain for acting chiefs mr hepple said they discuss their salary requirements in private but for the majority of policemen the 1971 wage agreement represents sub stantial pay increases last year before reorganization of the forces took place under regional govern ment the police association negotiated with 13 different municipalities as a result there were many disparities in wages throughout the county at the low end of the 1970 pay scale was the town of wood- bridge where a first class constable was paid at the rate of 7300 annually at the high end was the town of richmond hill where an officer with the same qualifications could expect to earn
