on thursday night in the final game of the regular schedule sunderland was the visiting team to the local park and as the game was slowly drawing to a close the bed sox were trailing by a 53 count lome sehell stepped to bat and pounded out a long triple over the ouifield fence and was followed by chadwick with a single with the tying runs on base bob has sard strolled to the batting circle with a determined look in his eye as the pitcher faced the batter apparently unconcerned the big expro star took up his regular batting stance waving the club high above his head like a piece of match wood as the first pitch flashed across the plate hassard wheeled the bat completely around throwing himself almost out of the box once more the pitcher wound up and once more the bat cut through the air as the umpire call ed out strike two at first it appeared that the story was to take the form of the mighty casey tale but little did the hurler know about the intentions of the batter as he wound up for the payoff pitch as the third ball winged its way over the plate a resounding crack split the air as all eyes scanned the sky in search of the tiny ball up up and still up it climbed as the fielders ran back in a vain attempt to catch the grand slammer over one fence across the road and over another went the well tagged ball losing itself in the shrubbery far out of the park amid the cheers of the spectators and handshakes of his team mates hassard waltzed home with what proved to be the game winning hit the home run seem ed to break the hearts of the visitors as the locals added four more to take the contest 105 both teams collected a run in the first innings but the visitors went two up in the second on three errors by the homesters in the third innings sunderland added another run and only for a spec tacular shoe string catch by the right fielder ted cadieux kept the opposition from adding one more lome and ken sehell both came across in the bottom of the third with runs to make the score read 43 sunderland counted run num ber five in the top of the fifth and held that edge until hassards game winning homer earl cook did the hurling for the bed sox and aided his team in their seventh inning rally by slam ming a long triple but of the park lome sehell came through with his second hit of tlie innings with a double driving in laushway and smith although the home run by hassard was the highlight of the game the entire team after a few bad innings in the early stages of tlie contest looked good and ended tlie regular schedule on the right foot the locals suffered only two losses during the regular league games one being to sutton and the other to port perry the home sters have come out on top in all their home gamesthe locals now stand by awaiting their grouping in the playoffs which should be coming up without too much delay of his favorite player over the radio and had seen his picture in the paper was never fortunate enough to come face to face with his
