shift to nl as american allstars lose 83 the national league inner circle on wednesday saw an end to the american leagues reign of terror and predicted a new cycle shifting the batting power to the senior circuit gil hodges strapping brooklyn first baseman and the national leagues homerun leader said after last weeks 83 triumph over the americans it is the national that has the homerun hitters now not the american yes sir times have changed ralph kiner the nationals home run king for the last five years echoed this sentiment kiner and hodges each wallop ed a home run as the big boys bombarded five pitchers for a dozen hits and ran up the biggest run total ever made by a national league allstar team stan musial of the st louis cards and bob elliott of the bos ton braves also smashed homers for the winners those of hodges and elliott came with a man on base geo kell and vic wertz of detroit hit solo fourhaggers for the americans the nationals had won only five of the 17 previous allstar tilts and had dropped 30 of 47 world series they havent won a world series since 1946 last year they had to go 14 innings to win the allstar game 43 the emphasis was strictly on the home run but little richie ashburn fleetfooted philadelphia phillies outfielder brought the huge briggs stadium crowd of 52075 to its feet with a brilliant leaping catch in the sixth innings to rob loft bander it may be early in the season to talk about hockey but as the old saying goes theres no time like the present and the clipper i management have already discuss ed their plans for a winning club three of last years players have given notice that they will not be able to join the squad for the com ing season due to their jobs or other reasons these players are bobby hopper george stark and gord lewis manager tim oneiil has high hopes of obtaining some of the players from the disbanded st mikes and marlboro clubs and hecause these two squads have folded up the players obtained would not be classed as imports the players sought by the local club could if they desired go to some other team in the senior a group but some of them have jobs in toronto and find it impossible to tie themselves down to squads situated in a city many miles away as they would either have to travel long distances or forget about their positions a few of these big league stars would help in no small way to strengthen any club and just how good some of these players are was discovered by our local club guests welcome r and neighbouring squads when they came face to face with brant- ford and owen sound last season in a little better than two months hockey will be in full swing again so now is the time to begin plan ning for a winning squad stan miller hurls three hitter stan miller lanky on local squad for nine years nine years ago at the age of only 12 eorne porky schell started out with the local junior squad as a pitcher or a short stop and since that time he has held either one of th two positions every year without fail born in stouffville lome attended high school where he participated in all sporting activities including softball and hockey after leaving school he began to concentrate on hardball and often night after night he might be seen working out with his brother ken in the park or wherever they might find room to throw the ball around lome unlike his brother ken never cared to hold the decker back of the plate and thus fact made it easier for the two brothers to get in lots of practice as lome had a great desire to pitch in his days of junior ball lome starred with some of the other standout players of that day although a number of them were much older than himself such players as minton jewett rouse holburn were among the boys on the team at that time the first game that lome ever played was down at markham when asked about the hurling ability of the team the young star replied that there was no particular pitcher on the team at that time and anyone who thought he could throw some sort of curve or drop was given a try to make good in all the days of his hurling success lome has only had one man receive his balls behind the plate and that was his brother ken and as lome jok ingly explains this was used be cause brother ken was the only man who could keep his eyes on the terrific curves as the criss crossed in front of the batter lome has always been one of the most consistent batters on the squad and this season is no excep- r1ngw00d lome emmerson accompanied by three school friends left on friday morning to spend a few days in placed singles or doubles that set him up in scoring position lome has always held down short stop position when not on the mound but has never attempted any other place on the team as we glance over the files that go back through the years the name of lome schell is plainly visible in the annals of stouffville baseball history such headings appear through the pages juniors lead bowmanville behind four hit pitching of lome schell stouffville wins as schell in top form or lome schell holds newmarket to two hits as the games come and go we hope as we glance over the start ing lineup the name of lome porky schell will be seen either as the starting hurler on the mound or down at his regular spot at short always with that never say die look on his face and giving the pitcher on the opposing
