to attend high school classes at the pickering district high school at pickering chairman of the improvement district of ajax pt bayly told county council friday however since the village has not yet any plans for its own high school he personally has no objection to what has been done in school planning so far he told council mr bayly pointed out to coun cil that possibly ajax should have one moie representative on the district board 1 am not in disagreement with what has been done said mr bayly we are a fastgrowing community and it may be that in five or six years the present facilities will lie inadequate more planning will have to he done but the only point i wished to make is that certain ajax parents dont like to be presented with an accomplished fact in planning their school future it leaves a bad taste speaking indirectly on the sub ject deputyreeve neil mcewen of pickering commended ajax people should move cautiously in their requests until they are fully established as a democratic com munity and able to guide their own affairs i wouldnt want to see them at the present time insisting on tights on the same basis as other municipalities that in view of the fact that in many civil actions the litigants are electing trial by judge and fury the costs are paid by the county this county council peti tions the provincial government to amend the jurors act to pro vide that litigants would not be able to elect trial by jury unless their claim exceeded 500 balsam and mount zion miss julia oreski of toronto spent the weekend with mr and mrs cecil jones master douglas finds membership of county road board unevenly distributed i hope the members will realize when they are voting that it is important in this large county to have road board membership spread throughout the county and particularly to have representation in the south which by reason of its large assessment pays a large pro portion of the costs of county roads reeve w h westney of pickering told county council members in whitby last week after voting was laboriously completed it was found the person nel of the road board is ernest camick rama tom harrison thorah garnet wilson canning- ton john bruce mara and tom harding reach harding and har rison were already members of the board wilson received a fiveyear term bruce four years and camick one year mr westney rose to speak on the subject that is the way we voted but it is not a logical distribution of representation he said appointments to the road board are usually keenly contested and this was the case last week vot ing was conducted by means of the warden choosing each councillors name at random from a tumbler and then the councillor is asked how he votes if no candidate gets a clear majority as is often the case it is customary for the low man to withdraw with the results that votes may be switched to someone else should the low man be unwilling to withdraw the sit uation is complicated it is not often that a member of the road board actually serves out a long term many tilings can happen in live years mast likely he could be defeated in his own municipal elections he might be elected warden in which event he is expected to resign he might as in the case of reeve william noble last year have to withdraw from the council through unusual cir cumstances bridge programs are going to be frowned upon this year dis trict engineer leslie boucher told council due to the scarcity of materials the government does not want to put much steel in bridges 1 was told just this week by hon george h doucett min ister of highways continuing the minister has warned us that we should retrench on road programs because of the uncertain international situation mr boucher said reeve thomas harding of reach has been reappointed chairman of the road board reeve ernest hayes is appointed a member of the board of audit reeve duncan mclntyre and rae ferguson are appointed commissioners of the county home central
