midweek prayer and bible study meeting on thursday evening mrs f ward and mrs f redshaw were appointed to arrange the program for the month and all members were made responsible for increasing the church service yesterday and left townspeople indignant makhig hydro changeovers in the area comstock company employees set off the alarm so many volunteer fire brigade mem bers at knox united church mr and mrs lloyd smith of port perry were sunday visitors at the home of mr and mrs geo willson mr v c willson and mr dean mains were at queensville on mon day attending the funeral of his cousin the late mr win purdy mrs ross middleton mr gerald middleton and miss post of mark- ham visited on sunday with mr and mrs reuben middleton at port hope mr and mrs t rickard and little son of uxbridge also mr g seebeck and daughter of markham spent new years with mrs d see beck mrs wm ellicott returned home after spending a few days at the home of her daughter and son-in- law mr and mrs r ford of high land creek the many friends of miss ruth gillman are sorry to hear that she again returned to oshawa hospital for another serious operation we all wish her a speedy recover mrs wc wilson and mrs wa knox who have been confined to their homes due to colds are now somewhat improved the annual congregational meet ing of st johns church will be held on wednesday evening jan 17th the annual sunday school meeting will lie held the same evening the regular monthly meeting of the wms of st johns church will be held at the home of mrs albert gray on thursday after noon jan is hostesses are mrs a gray mrs wm gray mrs robt miller and mrs w hamil ton program convener is mrs h barclay with group c roll call a verse from the book of philippians the wa of st johns church is holding a concert in the hall on friday evening jan 12th at s pm the program will consist of films shown by mr fred bunting from the dounham nursery also musical numbers tea and pie will be served come and enjoy a pleasant johnston the devo tional period was taken by mrs l matthews the program was in charge of mrs geo duncan plans were made for the concert being put on under the auspices of the wa with mr bunting of committee con sisting of percy neal chairman r loken and b jamieson pickering township council had many problems confronting them at their initial meeting on jan sth but perhaps nothing was more involved than the policing prob lem councillor fred zinkie who heads the police committee moved a police commission be set up consisting of the local judge mag istrate and reeve westney ser ious discussion followed as some felt it was a hazardous step to take deputyreeve mcewen went on record as being in favour of a commission its taking it right out of our hands isnt it councillor bals- don inquired council was informed the police department want three extra men added to the staff of four men now employed by the township to police the southern part and if the policing of the northern part were taken over from the provincial police still three additional men would be needed i dont see why we need a staff of ten men one councillor object ed and the rest seemed to be of the same opinion the deputyreeve stated you couldnt get anywhere until you had a base of operations we agreed to take a building across the road from the chiefs house for a temporary setup councillor zinkie
