two years to live but what to do that was the question as if by guidance from god daughter anne gibson of mississauga obtained a february 2007 edition of the readers digest on the front cover was the outline of a large heart within its borders was an announcement entitled the latest in cardio research after reading the report anne contacted her mother and she called scarborough centenary hospital a staff physician there phoned dr eric horlick an cardiologist at the peter munk cardiac centre at toronto general hospital the wheels were turning the story written by clau dia cornwall explained how a procedure had been devel oped allowing a catheter to be inserted into a vein in the patients groin a clip to repair the aorta valve could be threaded up to the heart and steered into position by means of a 3d guidance system according to dr horlick the ability to repair a valve without major surgery is attractive for patients with roaming around with jim thomas other medical problems in st pauls hospital in vancouver a similar pro cedure was done with no adverse effects previously if a heart valve was too badly damaged to repair doctors could recom mend it be replaced through openheart surgery while edith was considered a good candidate she readily admits a hesitancy to proceed we had to do it hus band don said there was no other way edith was only the 10th patient in ontario to go this route the operation was per formed oct 1 her surgeon was dr christopher feindel because the procedure was still relatively new other physicians were in atten dance including one from vancouver according to don the old valve was pushed aside and a new one inserted ediths condition was closely monitored for nine days she was later released to st johns convalescence hospital in thornhill where she remained for two weeks dr horlicks very pleased with my progress im feeling better every day edith says convalescence is expect ed to take eight months by coincidence edith and daughter donna were in separate hospitals at the same time edith in toronto gen eral and donna in markham stouffville both are doing well don underwent a liver transplant dec 18 1997 it was a donation from someone he
