confident it has the right security measures in place to protect students this comes on the heels the conviction of a man who planned to kidnap a girl from a newmarket school matthew byers 31 of new market was recently convicted aug 24 of plotting to kidnap a girl after being found in a wood ed area behind glen cedar pub lic school in 2005 when york regional police arrested the man he had child pornography duct tape and electrical wire in his backpack written records found in his home spelled out an elaborate scheme to kidnap a child said det sgt lynn rooney who over sees the sexual assault bureau the man was found guilty of attempted murder sex crimes and other offences the public board did not change its policies after he was found near the school but there has been heightened vigilance york region district school board spokesperson ross virgo said while security protocols can differ from school to school policies include signins for visi tors and the use of closed circuit cameras and chimes for schools that do not have a direct line of sight from the office to the front door mr virgo stressed the incident did not happenon the schools grounds but while the board touts tough measures to protect chil drens safety some residents in the area of glen cedar are not feeling as confident parent julie andersen who lives steps away from glen cedar said she believes the wooded area behind the facility is not a safe place for children transients can sometimes be spotted near the park she said parents need to take respon sibility for their children she added i think as long as youre being a responsible parent i think your kids will be ok she said she tries to put the incident involving the man out of her mind however it is just a normal reaction to be more aware and i think tire awareness is a good thing she said ms andersen said she would like to see more lighting in the park and in other parks around town adding she hopes the courts will impose a harsh sen tence on the convicted man to send a message she would also like to see a publicly available sex offender registry an idea york regional police chief armand la barge has said he does not support another area resident who didnt want his name used to protect his child has a son who will be attending glen cedar next year he has concerns with the ravine but called the mans arrest out of the ordinary the public board advises staff to speak with visitors to the school and when there is an incident or perceived threat the school sends parents a letter detailing ways to remind their children about how to protect themselves the york catholic district school board plans to equip all of its schools with surveillance v cameras by the end of decem ber spokesperson chris cable said senior student facilitators trained to report suspicious activ ity also keep an eye on the school grounds ms cable added another added bonus is we have uniforms she said adding that can help identify people out of the ordinary the catholic board also sends notes to parents if an incident occurs the board also reminds par ents even if they just want to visit their children at school they should follow
