ballantrae child care centre was an emotional issue for ward 2 residents at last thursday nights mayoral and ward 2 candi dates meeting the child care centre opera tors were told earlier this year they would have to leave their current premises in the bal lantrae community centre next summer about 65 local children would be affected incumbent phil bannon and justin altmann are competing for the council seat in the rural ward mr altmann looked over the audience and noted that many parents and grandparents were present in my household children come first he said the current day care location gives people peace of mind mr altmann noted because they know their children can walk across the yard to a safe facility ballantrae public school is locat ed beside the day care centre which has been in the communi ty for 18 years it makes no sense to get rid of it mr altmann said mr bannon who has been working on the issue since the summer said he has given local parents a commitment to pro vide them with before and after school day care at ballantrae pub lic school starting in september when some residents called out from the audience asking where their children would go during the day mr bannon said other locations in the area are being sought election 2006 when he was first elected three years ago mr bannon said he got an earful about the truck traffic on aurora road he has worked with york regional police and the ministry of transporta tion to hold periodic truck inspections during the past three years more than 400 trucks have been stopped and more than 100 pulled off the road more than 200 charges were laid these are 100 accidents wait ing to happen he said mr altmann said aurora road isnt where trucks should be going in the first place divert them south to bloomington road he suggested and north to davis drive these roads have been constructed to withstand tiiis type of heavy traffic when it comes to latcham gallery mr altmann said art makes people look outside the box and explore different con cepts he supports funding the gallery because of its importance to the community mr bannon wants to ensure the gallery has a future it could offer more programs for children he suggested and encourages some kind of coordination with the active fine arts community in lemonville the musselmans lake area has been ignored for too long mr altmann said particularly when it comes to the roads dont hire more engineers from other places to tell us what to do he said explaining resi dents know best how it should be taken care of the discrepancy between the roads being built in stouffville and not being built and repaired in rural areas at the same rate was pointed out by mr bannon financial support is needed from the region so the town can then take charge of ninth line and other roads and repair them he said to help business throughout the municipality the town has to make sure investment and com mercial enterprises that are good for the community are coming into town mr bannon said he also wants to do something about the fees the town charges new and existing businesses the current system makes it harder for new businesses to open and existing ones to improve noting he has created several small businesses since he was 16 mr altmann said to compete against retailers such as wal- mart small businesses have to offer unique and diversified serv ices and merchandise to improve the look of the downtown as a whole mr alt mann suggested partnerships could be formed with business local trades and artists to beautify the downtown area on a volun teer basis these could include having tradespeople put up board and batten fronts on stouffville main street businesses for example or having decorating businesses paint storefronts
