time for the terry fox run we are all aware of this communitys ded ication to terrys ambition and goal courage was deep in the soul of this man he looked cancer straight in the eye knowing he was going to lose his battle but with determination he wanted to be the cat alyst to defeat cancer some day cancer is a disease that has touched all of us whether a family member friend or co worker its a disease that has no preference and can strike any of us at any time we inspired by a hero have steadily been arming our experts with new funding to chase it down because of terry and his altru istic acts we are getting closer and closer to knocking it out its a moving moment and very inspiring for each individual give yourself a chance to experience the genuine compassion of this event stouffville you have always proven what a responsive community you are with this clear purpose lets all get out there and make terrys hope and dream a reality at tomorrows run keith acton stouffville web war of words continue re town supplier deny conflict charge sept 9 first i would like to clarify when whitchurchstouflville issued its request for proposals it refused to answer any questions from both panorama and bizzone this makes the comments of rickwigmore president of the ravenshoe group it is a web companys job to find out what clients want particularly ironic how can you find out what a client wants when the client issues a vague rfp just 155 words inanewspaper ad and then refuses to have any discussion with you secondly i must object to the mayor sue sherbans statement a subcommittee of the economic development committee recom mended the redesign of the towns website finally i wonder how many taxpayers real ize the mayorturneddownmyofierto develop free of charge a standalone economic devel opment website for the town i think its important to note last week two competitors did a joint presentation to council because of our shared belief in this community and strong conviction the town acted inappro priately with tliis rfp we thank council for tak ing our concerns seriously and asking the town to investigate further julie king gormley time to ban high sea bottom trawling i t m easy to tune out all i those bad news stories about whats going on in our oceans after all when you look out over the water it seems like everything is fine same as it ever was but look beneath those waves and it is a dif ferent story our outofsight outofmind mentality has prevented us from really catching on to what human activities are doing to marine life including important species we depend on for food nations industries and indi viduals all get away with doing things to our oceans people would never put up with on land one of those things is bottom trawling this fishing method involves dragging heavy nets weighted with beams or rollers over the ocean floor essentially bulldozing and scooping up what ever is in their path the nets are then hauled up to the surface where fishermen keep whatever fish they are looking for and throw back the rest most of which die meanwhile depending on the type of habitat trawled and the type of gear used the sea bottom can be left scoured bare if it sounds obscene that is because it is bottom trawling for fish is often like firebombing a forest to hunt deer it gets the job done but leaves a huge mess in its wake new technologies are now enabling modern bottomtrawl ing fleets to reach deepsea canyons and seamounts on the high seas the international waters outside national jurisdic tions seamounts are like mountain peak oases in the oceans that do not break the surface globally there are tens of thousands of these peaks and they are prized for the diversity of marine life they harbour of course this diversity also makes them targets for bot tom trawlers currently there are virtually no rules governing trawling on the david suzuki high seas that could change in november at a united nations meeting where countries will vote on a resolution for a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling the proposal has the support of thousands of international sci entists and when polled on the matter the vast majority of the public as well it is also a readily achievable goal at about 300 vessels high- seas bottom trawling is still a very small industry but one that hap pens to cause an inordinate amount of damage banning bot tom trawling at this stage at least temporarily to develop sustain able fishing plans would have minimal economic consequences and would go a long way to protect our already overfished oceans for the future i hate to dredge up the old analogy of the cod fishery collapse off canadas east coast but it is one we must never forget scientists repeatedly told the federal government we were tak ing too many fish and stocks were in danger the warnings werent heeded and a way of life disappeared for thousands of fishing families in eastern canada stocks still havent recovered we must never forget this story precisely because we cant see whats going on in the ocean from the surface it looks like all is well but this only means we have to pay much more attention when scientists tell us something is amiss yet in spite of this history and the fact there are no canadian bot tomtrawling ships working the high seas the federal government is waffling on a moratorium this is completely unaccept able damage caused by bottom trawling is well documented a formal science review from the federal department of fisheries and oceans released this spring confirmed the damage bot tom trawling can cause canada has the longest coast line in the world we have an international duty to do our part toward conserva tion and we cant afford any more mismanagement of such an important resource it is time for canada to step up and support a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling both to show some leadership and- to give the fish a much needed
