also excelled in volleyball baseball and track and field martiniello knox named top senior athletes at sdss at by jim thomas correspondent it was the student athletes night to shine the cream of the crop parad ed to the platform last thursday when stouffville district sec ondary school held its annual athletic banquet and awards night to be recognized as the most valuable in any specific sport is significant however to be selected as the best in his or her age class is momentous earning this years honours were matt martiniello as the senior boys athlete of the year liz knox senior girls matt raguseo junior boys and jaime sparks junior girls martiniello excelled in vol leyball track and field and base ball whatever the sport matt gave it his all teacher and coach steve jimmo said his work ethic was the ultimate among a wide range outstand ing senior athletes physical education teacher sharon macfarlane described knox as the most gifted athlete ive ever seen macfarlane noted regardless of winning or losing knox never give up until the final buzzer shes the most competetive and determined athlete ive ever coached macfarlane said added girls soccer coach rob edmondson liz knoxs most compelling attribute is her pleasant nature and while try ing to win at all costs she makes great friendships along the way with teammates coaches and opponents physical education head jamie hewitt described raguseo as the model studentathlete any coach would want to repre sent stouffville added coach susan bush jamie sparks is kind compete tive hardworking persevering thoughtful and genuine dis up by laura moller and annika bolender this role in 200607 will be taken by deanna williams and bethany chekay madigan named 2006 sports person of the year spirit assistant coach to receive award june 29 at franklin park marquee by jim thomas correspondent pat madigan acknowledged he was in shock not in a disappointing manner but rather in a pleasant and humble way after receiving word monday of his selection as whitchurchstouffvilles 2006 sports person of the year its an honour madigan said i still cant believe it there are others more deserving an assistant coach with the stouf fville spirit provincial junior a hockey league club madigan will be recog nized june 29 at a 7 pm ceremony in the franklin park marquee the presentation will be made by suntribune managing editor jim mason as part of the strawberry festi vals opening ceremonies mason who is also a vicepresident with the spirit felt madigans nomina tion was deserved patty is the heart and soul of our hockey team and has been since day 1 he said he genuinely cares about everyone involved and goes out of his way to help all this couldnt happen to a better person born and raised in scarborough madigan 50 received his formal educa tion at senator oconnor catholic high school and later victoria park sec ondary school twentyseven years ago pat and sandy madigan moved into the area liv ing first at musselmans lake and later in stouffville sandy died july 7 2005 involvement in sports has been pat madigans life as a teenager he played baseball rugby football and hockey every waking moment he was also an enthusiastic gymnast and wrestler madigan had a keen desire to play hockey beyond the midget ranks but coaches looked on his fivefoot five- inch 125pound frame as being too small that really deflated me he recalled but i continued to play in the metro toronto hockey league and the king clancy it was during the spirits first year of operation that former general manager wally crowder asked madigan to help out as equipment manager he agreed v vss wfi iw e w t j jsb ri fc sag ii ml sb hb sv wot n pat madigan has been involved with the spirit since their inception starting as an equipment manager later moving up to vicepresident and president after taking time off madigan returned and became an assistant coach along with matt gibson the general manager is ken burrows the head coach is dan west i feel very fortunate to be part of such a great organization he says ken burrows runs the show hes the best general manager in the league madigan claims stouffville is one of the best hockey towns in ontario the players and parents are appre ciative of what we do he says this makes it easier going to the arena every day he describes hockey in whitchurch- stouffville as a tradition and he feels fortunate to be in the position that he is with the spirit i just sort of fell into it he said also dons the striped shirt in addition to his work with the spir it madigan referees in the stouffville amateur hockey league where he once served as a player a president and vice- president however an experience he will never forget was his involvement with physi cally challenged youth in scarborough under the leadership of george greer then manager of parks and recreation george taught me so much he says madigan speaks highly of his three daughters mishelle enrolled at seneca college hayley and kelsey both attend ing stouffville district secondary school his father basil madigan still lives in scarborough a sister susan resides in burlington sheffield judokas make their mark marcus chan highlighted a group of students representing the sheffield judo club by earning a firstplace finish in his grouping at the recent ontario school championships in mississauga chan finished first in the grade 4 boys yellow and orange belts group secondplace finishes were earned by tressa sheffield in the grade 6 girls orange and green belts and stephen peterkin high school boys white-yel- lowprange belts finishing third were megan peterkin grade 4 girls whiteyelloworange belts lightweight colleen welch grade 4 girls whiteyelloworange belts mid dleweight ceilidh welch junior high school girls middleweight and lea sheffield ontario juvenile qualifier 48 kilograms
