stouflville suntribune thursday june 8 2006 5 the joys of shopping for a new vehicle it happens every three years or thereabouts its time to buy another car its time to discard its predecessor for me its the most diffi cult decision in the world a fact ive faced 28 times and it doesnt get easier truth is some men exchange wives with less anxiety than i switch auto mobiles without blinking an eye theyll trade up to a sleeker and sexier model overlook ing the fact the original while long out of warranty still has many miles to go so it was with our 2003 oldsmobile excluding front brakes and a fuel pump shed given us 67000 kilo meters of troublefree driving in appreciation weve looked after her well with regular washings waxings and oil changes while most drivers look on cars as strictly transportation i consider them almost human even attaching pet names to those i like most susies a favourite ive had quite a few susies since 1942 first wheels ah 1942 that was my first i bought it from charlie ward and cec hendricks coowners of maple leaf auto sales the cost was 800 1 later traded it in on a 1950 mete or coupe it could fly my first new car was a 1954 ford i purchased it from harold murphy of stouffville then came a 55 ford 57 pontiac 59 chev 60 volkswagen and a 60 chev thats when one could deal annually for 500 those days are gone and almost forgotten while automobile own erships a mania with me i cant say the same for my wife jean she prefers anything that starts and stops gimmicks like electric windows slid ing sunroofs leather uphol stery heated seats and four- onthefloor dont interest her a bit however shes big on colour and here she almost drove bob davies of the giles chevrolet company crazy the malibu we selected was supposed to be silver and it just so happened bob had one sitting on the lot take her for a spin he suggested let me know what you think i did parking it proudly in our drive i like it i like it jean enthused its no better than the one we have but i like it we mutually agreed to takelt roaming around with jim thomas however before signing the purchase papers i thought id run the colour card by jean one more time and im glad i did for shed changed her mind i like our present car so well she said i think out of respect we should keep the same colour so back to bob davies i went in the meantime con sidering the transaction complete a sold sign had already been attached to the silver chevy and general motors had been notified of the wouldbe sale sorry i said jeans had a change of heart she now wants grey bobs face fell but he uttered not a word he didnt have to i knew what was thinking okay grey it is he final ly offered but well have to order it in- from another dealer i thanked him for his patience and gladly signed the deal on may 26 our grey mal ibu sedan arrived we took delivery two days later while we love the car the way it rides and how it han dles jean turns her head every time we drive down fairview avenue for parked forlornly in a distant corner of the lot is one lonely oldsmobile alero currently unwanted and obviously unloved needs a home it looks so sad she says like a comfortable old shoe such has been the epi taph attached to every tradein weve ever made she sheds a tear for the olds represents three years and 67000 kilometers of memories memories of good times we cant retrieve but you can begin a new memory trail if you hurry the asking price is 8000 a bargain as used cars go one request tell susie who sent you shell feel better and so willl jim thomas is a stouf fville
