dan mcwhinney makes a pad save oflfa shot taken by oakville blades luke moodie dur ing wednesdays deciding game of the bestofseven provincial junior a hockey league semifinal series at the stouffville arena the spirit prevailed 43 and advanced to the final where they are facing the st michaels buzzers the sec ond game will be played sunday at the stouffville arena at 330 pan photoherb garbutt vt h game 2 sunday in stouffville by mike hayakawa staff writer unbelievable inexplicable indescribeable those were some adjectives exhaled by several jubilant members of the stouffville spirit after the provincial junior a hockey league club reached another pinnacle in its 11 year existance wednesday the spirit advanced to the final with a 43 win over the oakville blades in the deciding game of the bestofseven semi final series at the stouffville arena unfortunately for the spirit there was little time for celebra tion as they began the best-of- seven final series against the st michaels buzzers who eliminat ed the bowmanville eagles in five games in their semifinal affair yesterday at the st michaels college school arena in toronto the series will resume sunday at the stouffville arena at 330 pm mcwhinney stayed focused overcoming a huge deficit in trailing the series three games to one to force a seventh game that was played before an enthusias tic crowd of nearly 1100 onlook ers the spirit erupted for four unanswered goals in the first period randy johnson steve kapol- nas joel sheppard on a power- play effort and will acton just 46 seconds after sheppards tally accounted for the goals after sheppard scored blades head coach don edwards pulled starting goalie marc stuart in favour of david scamurra the blades cut the deficit before the period ended with a powerplay marker and accounted for the only two goals in the second period to cut their deficit to 43 but they would not put any more pucks past spirit goalie dan mcwhinney who was put to the test in the third period when he stopped 19 shots in total the blades outshot the spirit 4429 the guys didnt want to stop playing hockey its an unbeliev able feeling said mcwhinney to think back of all of the cur fews we went through during the regular season and the practices and the tilings you give up to play to reach the league final is what makes it all worth it to win this you cant explain it in words added kapolnas but it sure feels great with the spirit nursing the onegoal lead entering the final period mcwhinney said he was nt the least bit nervous in trying to hold down the fort he was determined not to let anything get behind him it was one of the times which ive been the most focused only to stare at the puck for 20 straight minutes he said i knew that if they had scored it would have given them the momentum and i wouldnt like the result spirit assistant coach matt gibson felt the clubs quick start set the tone we executed our gameplan we came out strong with some energy and created a decent forecheck he said considering the games mag nitude gibson was surprised the club got off to a quick start but he praised the teams collective effort in setting the tone youre always surprised when you come out and get a 4- 0 lead especially in a game 7 but it was done by a lot of effort by our guys they came out fly ing and we put them the blades on their heels but give them the blades credit they kept coming back gibson was also quick to credit the work of mcwhinney every championship team needs a good goalie and dan did it for us especially in the third period they had three or four good opportunities but dan stood on his head the players revealed they played the last two games with some added incentive the absence of team captain and vet eran defenceman ian brunt from the roster in last sundays fifth game in stouffville the unionville resident was assessed a five- minute penalty and a fourgame suspension for intent to injure ian was definitely on our mind he was definitely missed in the dressing room and on the ice said mcwhinney hes an inspiration and a hard worker for us won it for brunt we know that ian is a huge part of this team and im glad he was with us and we did it for him added kapolnas the spirit was attempting to appeal brunts suspension if the league rules against the spirit brunt would not be available to play until the third game in facing the buzzers the spirit held the upper hand on the south conference champions during the regular season having won an oct 6 contest 32 and tying them 22 jan 6 the players though said those games are irrelevant at this stage of the season theyre a talented team and they can score goals kapolnas said of the buzzers weve just got to play hard theyre a fast team added mcwhinney of the buzzers for the remaining dates of the series log onto wwwstoufmllespiritcom vrpr rr iltl rpsr ft tif ct t-
