stouffville suntribune thursday april 6 2006 7 female athletes deserve better hardly a week goes by that i dont visit stouf- fville district secondary school for whatever reason i always take a few extra min utes to view the athletes wall of fame located in a hallway between the gymnasium and cafeteria its history etched in stone students past and present whove made their mark all athletically some academically as well lets hope when sdss moves to its new site these living legends will find a new home a respected place of distinction don haynes peter sanderson jim hill andrew watson lloyd graves scott evans derek gresham wayne feasby laurie buckland ken ben son gord eckardt kyle miller and gavin howe should never be forgotten all boys nor should marion atlkinson joan foote daphne chewins linda wright donna skinner mar ion byer mary otter lisa zeck peggy mcbride andrea crothers lisa snooks lyla yip jessica harris lindsay hermanson joanne crym- ble natalie geiger anne and raequel beecher liz mary and amy sled brenda and linda hachey cassie and jaime sparks and more all girls but alas in my opinion female athletes at every level continue to play sec ond fiddle to their male counterparts not just locally but nationally too the sdss spartans aaa girls ice hockey champions of ontario are prime exam ples within three years this great group of gals has brought fame not only to their school but to their town so how was this amazing achievement celebrated the players treated thenv selves to hamburgers and fries at a st thomas mcdon alds some celebration and what on their return no wailing of sirens no blar ing of horns no cavalcade of cars no waving of flags no cheering of fans no any thing it was comparable to a bunch of jocks arriving home from a nature walk through bruces mill yes the school to its credit did its part staff and students were kept informed on game results the word congratulations was emblazoned on the entrance signboard a victory announcement was deliv ered over the schools pa gold medals were displayed for kids to admire a framed team photo was hung in the lobby and a championship roaming around with jim thomas banner will hang in the gym further accolades will undoubtedly follow when sdss holds its annual athletic banquet this spring credit too goes to the management and players of the jr a spirit the girls and their coaches were formally introduced and recognized during last thursdays stouf- fvilleoakville playoff game they received a rousing ova tion the players in turn praised the cooperation and commitment of coaches daniel mcconnachie and brian shankman it was mr mcconnachie who put the achievement in perspective explaining that of all secondary schools in ontario whose goal it is to reach an ofssa final only 2 per cent ever make it further only 1 per cent of participants ever receive medals he said our high school hockey girls not only made it to the medal podium once but twice winning a silver in 2005 its an accomplishment equalled only once before in the 52year history of the school mr mcconnachie refuses to hide that his club came under pressure in the semi final when more than 200 st thomas supporters attended hoping to rally their team coach mcconnachie urged his players to concentrate on the game rather than retalia tion this they did he said the score was 21 advancing the spartans to the champi onship against sudbury for five of the stouffville girls this was their last hurrah liz knox kendal knox ashley mclellan kim bound and kate devine will advance to a level of higher learning what a sendoff although netminder liz knox has her heart set on a business and marketing course at wilfrid laurier uni versity waterloo it was rumoured leaf coach pat quinn was recently spotted lurking behind the stouffville players box supposedly look ing for a goaltender jim thomas has written for area newspapers tor wore than 50 years tt buy a i1am from us youll be happy- weve made hams in our business for the last 19 years we just werent ready for that first year when i think back to those times i laugh a bit at what we went through to do it our cooking facilities consisted of a domestic range that we bought at pascals long gone now both the range and pascals we absolutely wore out that poor stove roasting two hams at a time day and night in the ensuing years we added ovens to the point where we can now cook about 65 hams at a time and that doesnt include smoking i laugh as well when i think of the quantity of ham that weve sold over the years by now in excess of a
