stouffvilk suntribune b thursday oct 13 2005 5 smokers gauntlet f dor cofasffloned degrades school i had just returned from a visit to stouflville district secondary school or stouflville high as most of my vintage call it my purpose for being there was to deliver memos to teachers daniel mcconnachie head mas ter of a marvellous 60- member band and miriam sellick- smith director of a melodic 20member choir both groups will partic ipate in the 13th annual student music scholarship concert nov 4 1 feel privi leged to be a part of it unfortunately privilege isnt an appropriate way to describe feelings while walking a gauntlet of non conformists ringing an area of edward street a few feet beyond the high school grounds at best the experience is one of indifference at worst apprehen sion but in all honesty its neither one i contend this situation has gone far past the stage of indifference i suggest this form of intimidation is downright frightening its giving sdss a bad name a repu tation it doesnt need or deserve pleasesomeone eradi cate this curse what are these extrem ists trying to prove that being a misfit is macho what image do these radicals wish to present that weird is wonderful and where are the par ents dont they care where are the police dont they dare no the inmates arent in charge of the asylum the majority of students walking up and down the hallowed halls of this cele brated institution are sane sensible kids most with a single purpose in mind to make their mark in a workaday world and this is good this is what education should be all about unfortunately at sdss and perhaps other second ary schools therell always be a hard core cluster of renegades who feel theyre beyond the norm and above the law they enjoy being looked at stared at and in some cases glared at sad this crowd that con gregates a few steps beyond school turf had its beginning when the board of education in its wis dom ruled against onsite smoking at the time it seemed like a good idea but like prohibition of the 30s it didnt work the drinkers simply employed their habit elsewhere and so do high school smokers but jssis roaming around with jim thomas not underground rather in full view an ugly sight pacifists will say you cant tell a book by its cover and perhaps to a degree theyre right who knows there may be lawyers surgeons even educators within this group but im talking today not tomorrow show me now ive had a close associ ation with stouffville high since the building opened 51 years ago the enrol ment has increased con siderably during the past halfcentury but sad to say the decorum hasnt not in conduct or in dress when a new fall term rolls around i always say to myself maybe this school year will be differ ent it wasnt and it isnt strange as it may seem my overview of minority student behaviour isnt seen as any big deal by those guys and gals who choose to walk the line so the circle goes unbroken back in my day 60 years ago administration was responsible for students behaviour from the time they left home until they returned perhaps this has changed if so bring it back more importantly administration should be responsible for all student behaviour during a regular school day including noon hours this would resolve the problem but only if the rule is enforced a school elementary or secondary is deserving of respect this deference should apply not only to the building and those who work within it but to the taxpaying public who built it and maintain it the motley crew that congregate at the edward street entrance represent a stigma that should not and must not be tolerated jim thomas a stoujjville resident has written for area newspa pers for more than 50 years this is perfect for those evenings when
