are basically good theyre danger ous because theyre so powerful it only takes one or two breeds to make people suspect any breed can be dangerous the govern ment is just picking on the pit bulls law firm wins award by joan ransberry staff writer three graduation pictures hang on the walls at button armstrong and ness the glassframed pictures in the downtown law firm show three generations of button lawyers fred button graduated from osgoode hall in 1902 his son reginald was called to the same bar in 1938 and grandson eric earned a law degree from dalhousie university in 1970 recognizing the law firm has served the local commu nity for more than 100 years the whitchurchstouffville chamber of commerce has presented mr button and gordon ness with a special heritage award this year being acknowledged is part of the charm of stouffville mr button said now we can really call our selves ancient the award rests on a man tle at the front desk the main street office two doors from the post office is more than an office its the former home of mr buttons grandparents i use to sleep here when i was a little boy he said often when the 60-year- old lawyer receives clients he doesnt have to ask for names addresses or other back ground information theres no need those seeking legal service are the children and grandchildren of the clients of his father and his grandfather the clients represent many generations mr button said because we know each other theres a trust a knowing and an understanding its invalu able the law practice actually dates back to 1895 when lawyer james mccullough hung his shingle in stouffville township my grandfather set up a practice here in town shortly after he graduated mr button said one day during a terrible snow storm grand father met mr mccullough at the magistrates court in whitby they agreed that it was silly having them both there and a partnership was struck from then on the firm was known as mccullough and button barristers and solicitors when fred button died in 1954 his son had been with the firm for 16 years after his fathers death the business became h reginald button barrister and solicitor reg button built a reputation he became known as a lawyer with sound communication reasoning and analytical skills and of course a willingness to put in long hours in 1966 reg button wel comed montgomery armstrong as a partner while litigation and familylaw lawyer gordon ness joined the firm two years later mr armstrong now retired lives on stouffvilles rose avenue hes 96 years old monty could tell you some stories mr ness said mr ness met the buttons by chance when his parents were in the process of buying a house in pickering they used their son as their lawyer the transaction involved button and armstrong during the proceedings mr ness was offered a position with button and armstrong i didnt even know where stouffville was mr ness said but id always wanted to get out of toronto so i accepted on my first day reg asked me how much i wanted to get paid as soon as eric graduated from the nova scotia univer sity he joined the firm to work alongside his father specializing in real estate transactions and estate work in the growing community mr button has always been busy i practised with my father up until he retired in 1975 mr button said as chairperson of the local business improvement area mr button views the down town as the heart of the com munity i want the downtown to survive mr button said theres a future here its vital for a community to preserve its downtown briefly couple wins 100000 a
