soccer team wants to earn ofsaaaa berth the stouffville district secondary school spartans varsity girls soccer team is tackling some thing new when it takes to the pitch for the york region athletic association season after winning a yraa tier two title two seasons ago and being tier two finalists last year the spartans will move up in calibre to the more competitive tier one circuit spartans head coach rob edmondson anticipates his club will be far more challenged this season when they play in the southeast division which includes markham district high school unionville high school brother andre catholic high school and st augustine catholic high school each of these teams he noted traditionally has players with rep experience while the spartans only have two players of this calibre the coach thinks they can be competitive if they adhere to the system hes installed you cant teach or coach players with heart and the girls on my team exemplify that when we play our system we will outwork people and we will be more competitive said edmondson although league play began yes terday with a road game against markham district high school the spartans did not come in unpre pared last month the spartans played in two indoor tournaments win ning the anderson collegiate invitational in oshawa and losing in the final in another as wellthe club had one exhibition outdoor game at port perry high school and pre vailed 41 so far weve been competitive outside of york region at the senior level and i think well be competi tive this year in tier one in playing bigger and better teams edmondson said in assessing his clubs strength edmondson feels it lies in the mid- field area where they are using the athletic sister tandem of cassie and jaime sparks anchoring the defence is brittany moreau a grade 10 student liz knox will handle goaltending duties n regular season too short playing just a fourgame league schedule in a twoweek span along with the two early indoor tourna ments edmondson felt that wasnt substantial enough for his club in an attempt to make the season a lit- tie more meaningful he has entered his team in two outdoor tourna ments including one in allistqn may 7 and one in woodbridge may 20 the event- in alliston was one which they won last year with the soccer program enter ing its fifth year edmondson said another reason for the club choos ing to go tier one is to try and quali fy for the ontario federation of school athletic associations aa playdowns which will be held in thunder bay fielding a team with just two grade 12 players two in grade 9 and the rest in grades 10 and 11 edmondson predicts the schools varsity program should remain competitive for the next few years its really a true varsity team that we have he said for
