communities it means we publish stories about things that matter to our communities the things that touch peoples lives and some times change lives york region has witnessed tremendous growth and contin ues to change with every passing day our population has more than quadrupled since 1971 when it was 169000 and contin ues to skyrocket its expected to jump to 128 million by 2026 in fact we ranked as the fastest growing region in the gta in 2003 topping both toronto and peel and are the sixth largest municipality in canada dont we know it our communities particular ly in the southern portion of the region are among the most cul turally diverse in the nation the latest census revealed markham is the only municipality in the gta where visible minorities make up more than half the population fully 56 per cent of its citizens are nonwhite with richmond hill following closely at 40 per cent the face of the community hasnt yet changed as dramati cally in the northern portion of the region with visible minori ties in king east gwillimbury and georgina at about 3 per cent but achanging it is as diverse as we are now we continue to be a safe and harmo nious community for the most part and there is much that ties us together our newspaper helps to cre ate a sense of belonging to a debora kelly york region newspaper group editor in chief community by bringing the faces of our towns and the sto ries behind them to you we build our communities by connecting readers to what mat ters we strongly believe we cant be a great newspaper if thats not so but to do that we must con tinue to have strong links to our community despite its transfor mation community links we want all voices to be heard and frankly i think we may not even be aware of some the voices out there in an effort to build bridges with our community as it con tinues to change we are forming community links panels at each of our newspapers across the region we are inviting citizens with a variety of affiliations and inter ests to apply to join this group which we hope will give us gen uine insight into what is impor tant to our diverse communities we are extending a hand in this way because i know not everybody in our community reads this paper because those bonds with the community have not yet formed but we are also inviting all our readers with an interest in join ing community links to apply we will hold regular meet ings attended by editors and other members of our team here that will focus on dis cussing the issues that are important to the many neigh bourhoods cultures religions age groups professions and affil iations in our communities as well members of the panel will have the opportunity of writ ing a guest column on issues affecting our community ten members representing each of our newspaper commu nities will be selected were ask ing panel members to commit to a oneyear term beginning in january please send a letter outlining your background and why you feel you
