their neighbourhoods their member of council says close to 40 per cent of the trucks checked on aurora road last week had to be taken out of service because of safety and other infractions forty- three trucks were pulled over wednesday during the commercial motor vehicle blitz 18 had to be taken out of service problems included poorly functioning brakes unsafe tires and loads that were either insecure or too heavy the enforcement program was carried out during the day along aurora road from hwy 404 to the eastern border of the municipality at durham line 30 trucks oh aurora road in ballantrae pass an elementary school a daycare centre and community and seniors centres the number of injuries and deaths from improperly main tained trucks prompted councillor phil bannon who was injured a twocar crash on stouffville road tuesday to arrange the blitz which was carried out by york region police officers and staff from the transporation ministry every vehicle taken out of service for a safety infraction is a collision and a life saved police have entered into a partnership with the ministry and one of its officers was recently trained by the min istry as an inspector i want enforcement on aurora road mr bannon said it is a big issue with me although the 40 per cent rate for infractions is high it is not unusual staff sgt tom carrique of the traffic unit said so far this year the average number of infractions at the blitzes is 19 per cent last year an average of 30 per cent of the trucks pulled over had to be taken out of service more inspections are coming up police want to inspect at least 500 commer cial vehicles this year every vehicle taken out of service for a safety infraction is a collision and a life saved he said i am planning to do this again councillor bannon said we need more of these truck safety enforcement pro grams set up acknowledging truck blitzes cant do it all hell be approaching gravel haulage companies and building firms to work together to improve the safety of roads heavily trav elled by trucks he also wants companies to encourage drivers to use the designated truck routes along bloomington road and davis drive more
