schell ace building centre on edward street in downtown stouffville both specifically and generically over the past 82 years this enterprising firm like the proverbial oak has continued to grow producing branch es that add to its longevity it is a source of vigour and vitality in the community the companys latest acquisition stouffville cooper ative association adds yet another dimension the expanded facility will now include schell country depot and schell design centre all part of the former co op site interior renovations now underway should be completed within six weeks ron schell said we needed the room ron said we were burst ing at the seams the move provides an additional 6000 square feet what makes the schell firmso unique is the fami ly association going back to 1922 when wes schell and clayton stouffer pur chased the canadian bee supply and honey co calling it the stouffville planing mill six years later mr schell became the sole owner the name schell lumber ltd was adopted in 1955 brothers harry and percy schell wess sons head up the current operation harrys son steve and percys son ron are comanagers other family members now into four generations include larry schell janet partridge judy heffernan mike heffernan brian cote and richard kennedy murray redshaw now employed parttime joined 53 years ago next in line is exmayor wayne emmerson 32 years and gerry ratcliff 31 were one big family ron said the company also operates schell ace building centre in sutton twelve trucks serve an area from hwy 404 on the west to hwy 12 on the east lake simcoe on the north to hwy 7 on the south summer cottage construction is huge ron said with two and threeload trips weekly during the busy holiday season even during renovations everything will operate as usual ron said the depot managed by steve pope will carry bagged feed and seed lawn and garden supplies work clothes and farmrelated products what makes the schell firm so unique is the family association going back to 1922 when wes schell and clayton stouffer purchased the canadian bee supply and honey co calling it the stouffville planing mill the design centre will concentrate on windows and doors exterior siding ceramic tile trims and mouldings bathroom fixtures and hardware the depot will be rustic quaint and historical ron said the design centre will be inviting clean and neat although schell lumber and stouffville coop enjoyed a close working relationship prior to the move die acqui sition provides easy access to a north lumberyard notes ron they the coop were the best neighbours one could ever have ron said he explained while some product line overlap occurred we tried to be nice to each other now we can combine everything into one he added schell lumber has a long history of community better ment we want to grow as the town grows ron said and serve the community even better than before in this regard a motto promoted by his grandfather remains firmly entrenched employees dont work for you wes once said employees work with you its a motto the schell family hasnt forgotten and it shows jim thomas is a stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more
