economist sunsuntribune social issues saturday jan 102004 region spending 5 million on homeless fisch from page 1 york spent 5 million on services for the homeless last year and expects to do the same this year weve added a number of beds in hostels and transitional housing weve put in place an outreach van i think weve moved forward substantially in the last couple of years on homeless- ness to ensure york region residents are handled as much as possible mr fisch who said the region is pre pared to support the out of the cold program despite concerns it helps more people from toronto than york added few people here actually live on the streets we have a lot of people who are couch surfers or find themselves home less for a temporary period of time meanwhile he said york could provide more services if taxpayers here werent required to send more man 80 million a year to fund torontos social services under the provinces pooling program we know we have to give our fair share we know york region people go to toronto but not in the numbers that require 80 million in pooling costs twenty per cent of that would be a fair amount then we would have 60-to- 65 million in our budget for york serv ices mr fisch said other advocates such as regional homeless prevention officer jane nielsen and monica auerbach executive director of transitional and supportive housing believe york is taking small steps toward improving services but they agree much more needs to be done were back at square one said ms nielsen also cochairperson of the york region alliance to end homelessness were not going to turn them away on a cold night where would we send them to a snowbank from last year to this year in terms of it being cold outside and the home less were where we used to be it is not on the political radar screen i think the region recognizes there are problems and theyre trying to address them but there are a lot of bar riers to overcome and a lot of those bar riers are the perceptions about the homeless in the community according to ms auerbach 80 peo ple a night stay in yorks three shelters throughout the year but during last weeks cold that jumped to more than 100 workers referred people to shelters rs jpsfi ill h owoudpil imagff- cycle of life watercolour collection of artist opens sunday january 112004 14 pm artist will be in attendance exkibition organized day but when people show up after hours the shelters make room for them on cots couches and even on the floor were not going to turn them away on a cold night where would we send them to a snowbankms auerbach said she said homelessness is a problem that is growing as the regions popula tion increases we are full 365 days a year its rare we have space at the end of the day the problem of people living in poverty and being homeless is increasing because york region is increasing in fairness ms auerbach and ms nielsen pointed to programs such as the homeless prevention plan to ensure peo ple receive help before they are in crisis york region rather than put a bandaid on the problem they want to really create programs to keep people from falling off the cliff rather than to wait till theyre in the water which is smart ms nielsen said hepatitis c education support hep c chapter meeting nutrition janet madill dietitionliver transplant unit tgh wednesday january 21 support wednesday
