stouffville suntribune thursday nov 6 2003 7 with jim thomas record numbers for tomorrows its a record close to 500 students from kindergarten through grade 12 will display their vocal instrumental and dance talents at stoufrville district secondary school tomorrow at 730 pm the curtain goes up on the 11th annual student music scholarship concert hosted by st james presbyterian church- r- i schools taking part include st brigid stouffville christian summitview orchard park glad park ballantrae and sdss all monies received will be divided among participating schools to assist their music programs over the past 10 years thanks to community sponsorships and freewill donations more than 30000 has been raised town businesses and serv ice clubs have been marvelously supportive while fridays moment of glory is important to every boy and girl on stage as well as hundreds of proud parents the focus of attention will fall on one- student this years recipient of the 2003 music scholarship award she is i6yearbld kathryne irwin of stouffville now in her final year at sdss kathryne joins an elite group of previous winners georgma muir clara jordan cameron mackenzie and roaming around llp accom plished in many areas of music including the flute and piano she plays in the high school senior and jazz bands directed by dan mcconnachie- she also sings in the high school choir directed by miriam sellicksmith in addition shes studying piano under the tutelage of sharon wilkinson it was ann hemphill of orchard park school who initiated kathrynes interested in the flute it had a nice sound and was fun to play she recalls on reaching grade 9 kathrynes skills were further honed by mr mcconnachie kathryne considers it a privilege to sing in the schools sen- ior choir directed by mrs sellicksmith who she describes as a wonderful person under the guidance of mrs wilkinson shes advanced to grade 8 in piano more recently shes taken up the guitar the high schoolband says kathryne is so large its out grown the stage even with no grade 13 an influx of grade 9 students has more than made up the difference the flute sec tion alone has 15 members its wonderful says kathryne with a band so large we can play different kinds of music she also claims the band initiates a camaraderie between stu dents that otherwise would nt occur but kathryne doesnt con fine herself to sdss activities shes played her flute in wor ship services at st james and the piano at the main street churchs vacation bible school with all this she still finds time to punch out a tune on kathryne irwin stouffville the cash register at secondary student recipient of stouffvillesar towns 2003 music scholarship following graduation kathryne plans to attend university jit trent wilfrid laurier or western ontario she hopes to major in forensic science with a minor in music she maintains an 80plus average kathryne admits performing solo can sometimes be unnerving but in the end when you know youve done your best ifs all worthwhile over the years ive worked on several committees in sever al areas all with different challenges and objectives none however has beep more rewarding more satisfying than the sudent music scholarship why because the schools of our town and the youth of our town are the direct beneficiaries a crosssection of our stu- dents and teachers who give so muchbut expect so little come tomorrow and see for yourself jim thomas a member of the concert committee is a stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more than 50 years services war veterans royal canadian legion branch 459 is hosting three war memorial servic es in whitchurchstouffville this year on sunday at 1 pm members of the local legion branch host a 45- minute service at the stoufrville cemetery on tenth line it will be followed by an indoor service at the legion hall on the ninth line beginning at 2 pm light refreshments will be served follow ing the second service the traditional remembrance day service is at the cenotaph at the legion hall nov 11 at 11 am refreshments will be served in the hall following the ceremonies the public is invited to all three services local dignitaries will attend elect owen craig on november 10 2003 owen craig councillor ward six councillor ward six pmagiot pfmg ot no issue is too big for harry paying reconstruction of your streets fighting new developers with tooth and nail obtaining sidewalks in busy areas no issue is too small for harry cut weeds and outofcontrol grass in neighbourhoods remove ditches that have become polluted from neighbourhood public property assist in street parties i am sorry if i have not been able to help you yet call harry for arranging technicalities for street parties pushing the dormant plan for our senior citizens concluding the plan for a joint performing arts theatre movie theatre and a visual arts gallery bowe councillor ward 5
