writer poppy puppies cuddly toys designed to bring the remembrance day message to small children will be on sale in york region despite the reti cence of some local royal canadian legion branches the stuffed toys aimed at children younger than 10 were approved for sale by the legions dominion executive council ear- lier this year bruce poulin a spokesperson for the legion said poppy puppies were conceived as a way to give small children a partici patory role in remembrance day while providing a tool fpr parents to explain the meaning of the poppy the lapel poppies are not a safe item for small children because of the pins mr poulin said he said the royal canadian legion ordered 50000 large toys and 100000 small ones the small toys 35 inches long retail for 4 and the large ones seven inches are 850 to date legion branches have ordered about 40000 of the stuffed puppies were quite happy with the results so far mr poulin said there are no obligations or quotas for the branches mr poulin said the legion discussed the poppy puppy idea for several years before adopting it in february we looked to the us and they had a similar item to the puppy he said the rationale was to find a tool to impart these cute poppy puppies are designed to bring the remembrance day message to small children and will be on sale in york region remembrance day to young canadians but not every legion branch and veteran is enamored with the introduction of a toy and some branches are balk ing at the requirement to pay for the puppies up front john mccracken president of branch 459 in stouffville said the money to buy the dolls has to come out of the branchs general funds not its poppy fund then the branch has to hope it recoups its outlay this branch hasnt decided whether theyll be selling them yet mr mccracken said there are pros and cons some of us think they look like hell iwasnt pleased with them he added some ofthe older veterans believe the sale of poppy puppies might take away from poppy sales paul ducharme president of richmond hill branch 375 had the same concern a lot of people are not really keen on this because it will take away from the poppy cam paign he said this branch will not be sell ing puppies its not very feasible and theres very little profit for the branches its a way of getting the message to children i sup pose but its too expensive for us still other branches appear to be on side ken metcalfe president of branch 426 in newmarket said his branch will be ordering the poppy puppies but in limited numbers were just putting in orders for members who want them he said also some members of the public have asked for them and people in a couple of other branches he said the rninimum num ber a branch can order at a time is 24 so branch 426 will hold its order until sales are nailed down join a winning team over 3500 carriers deliver the york region newspapers and you can be one of them earn bonus points win great prizes earn extra money gain
